Title: Who uses a Gobbler call?
Post by: kevin2 on March 19, 2014, 09:54:54 PM
Who uses a gobbler call of some sort as part of their routine to call in birds? If so, what particular gobbler call is it? What Gobbler calls aren't worth trying?!

I have one but rarely use it... it's a primos and to me doesn't sound the greatest but the one time I had a bird hang up on me and I used it he came in to investigate. They work I just don't use them unless it's that very situation.

In my experience, they run the bird off nine times out of ten. I do gobble at times (on a box call), but usually as a last ditch, I have to leave the woods and he isn't budging, move. If you have time to keep hunting him, you can usually try a different tactic with a higher chance of success.

That all depends on how dominate the bird is which is almost impossible to tell I fully agree they can run a bird off but do can a full strut decoy. Gobble at a hung up boss and he'll be in your lap. Just speaking from my experience.

I killed a gobbler once on public ground in Missouri, played with the same bird three days in a row and could not get him inside 60-70 yds and actually never even saw him, was hesitant to gobble on public but had seen no others for the three mornings so I said why not, gobbled once and let me tell you that bird was on me immediately!!! pounded him at 30 yds!! that was with a shaker type call, quaker boy maybe.

I gobble on my mouth call and get plenty of responses but have had none react like that one!

Same here...I am fortunate enough to hunt private land with some ag fields, if I see a dominant bird for a few days and cannot do anything with him I will usually try and get in tight on him in his preferred area and put a full strut decoy out and gobble at him every time he gobbles.

Most of the time he comes running in to whip the interloper....but it has to be a dominant bird in the experience or he will turn tail and run the other way.

I use a Primos Gobble tube...easiest to use and serves the purpose the few times I use it every season.

I carry a cheap shake gobble call with me all the time but rarely ever use it, the only time it comes out is for a gobbler that's hung up out of sight by himself, and it usually upsets them enough for them to come running.

I use a diaphram call to gobble, it's easy to do and one less thing to carry!

I carry one,primos I think.
I sometime use it in the afternoon on a slow day,and I have also had it work several times on a hung up bird.

Ive got a DND Haint. I have only used it as a locator. Ive never tried calling a bird with it. But on the other hand when they are tight lipped to a crow, owl, and coyote locator I have squeezed a few responses from those old hard headed birds.

In the early 80's I carried a Red Wolf shaker allways. It worked on hung up turkeys from time to time.  Turkeys would gobble at it, sometimes.  When the reed split I tried to fix it  & failed.  I just never replaced it.  Two years ago I watched my son gobble a good gobbler up & kill it after we had thrown everything we had at silent turkeys  we knew were around.  So  I bought a Haint and tried to learn to use it......for me it should be called The Ain't.  I hate that thing. Never learned how to use it. Gave it a toss in the river. If I want to gobble, I'll shake a box.

I do.  It's been the death of several hard nosed longbeards.

I think it is most effective on early season birds when the hierarchy is being established and on henned up birds in their core area.

The Haint!!! Wouldn't go in the woods without it..situational use only, but I've had it for one full season and it has already caused a couple birds to have a headache.

I've got an hs strut and quaker boy shaker tube ones. I'll use them if nothing else seem to be working. A couple yelps and a double gobble.

I don't because I hunt public land most of time and its pressured so good way to get shot would be to gobble

I do. I keep it in my bag of tricks. I killed a gobbler a few years ago with 1 3/4" spurs by gobbling at him.

I do too when it seems needed but, will more often Jake or gobbler yelp if want to appear less aggressive. Just another tool. It is a shaker Quaker boy I think. Good for roosting at times as well.

I use the Haint just purchased my second one.  And I wont leave for the woods without it. It takes practice to get a good gobble sound out of it but by far is the most realalistic gobbler call on the market.  Had it one year and has helped with 3 dirtnaps.  If you have a strutting decoy set up you better hold on to the base of the tree.

I keep a haint on me all the time. If the bird is giving me trouble I use it. Over the past 2 seasons it has played significant part in the death of 4 gobblers.

I bought a Knight and Hale Hail Fire last year.  It worked really well for me in the evenings to get birds to gobble on the roost.  I did it use to try to challenge a couple longbeards that were strutting out in a meadow with their hens and they'd gobble back at me, but I couldn't convince them to leave their ladies.  Years ago I used a Primos gobble shaker as a last resort on a group of birds that were out in a field and moving away from me and they actually responded to the gobbles and came in to investigate and I whacked one of them.

When the situation calls for it, I use a Knight & Hale Hale Fire call; it works.  Also can use a box call, an old Primos "shaker" type gobble call, etc.  I use it as the "path of last resort", most of the times; it's not part of my "regular" routine.

I have used one numerous times with success. Primos Shaker.  When you start yelping with a diaphragm and then cut off your own yelp with a gobble, a lot of gobblers just cant stand it and will come in fast.

I wouldn't say I use it as part of a "routine" but I have successfully used gobbler calls to seal the deal.  I think it is a good late season tactic.

A couple years ago I gobbled at a bird in Kansas on the last day of the season who hung up at 80 yards then decided to go the other way.  As a Hail Mary, I gobbled at him (with my voice) when he was about 150 yards out.  He turned on a dime and met a face full of 6s just a few seconds later.

I use a two sided box and it can work wonders on a stubborn bird or even on a bird who is alone.  A few years back my Dad pulled a bird from over 1/4 mile away with a single gobble.  he came in on a string so to speak.  Just another trick in the bag.

Are you dressed up as a turkey?  :turkey2:  seriously though, I hunt public land and private land, I have never once thought on public land that if I gobbled I would get shot at.

I use it only as a last resort, but it does work. If I try a turkey for a few days and can't get him to come to anything else then I say what the hay and gobble at him. It will work. I use whatever I'm calling on. If I'm calling on a box call I use that. That way I can yelp, the cutt and then gobble at the cutt. It will make those jokers go crazy sometimes. Sometimes it will make him clam up for a few days. I had a Ben Lee record and he said he would crow and then gobble at it. Said he had been shot before. Not sure if that is true. I have heard Preston Pitman tell a similar story. I'm sure it could happen.

I got on youtube today & found some mouth call tutorials on how to do a pretty good Gobble call. Sounds pretty good after only a half hour of practice. Little spitty at first! But I got that all calmed down and in order!

Carry a tube that I can gobble on.Sounds a little more jakey than gobbler, but have used it on rare occasions and it sealed the deal.

Gobblers have 2 emotions in spring. Horny and jealous.
If he don't want some love, he might want a fight.
Always carry gobbler shaker call with me.

As a last resort I will gobble. I can gobble well with a mouth call so I will work a few in if the bird hangs up and nothing else seems to work and getting impatient. I have had some success, but rarely use it. Nice tool to have available if needed.

My first bird fell to a gobble call. Set up on a field edge 20 mins before the rain moved in. When the rain came, the birds hit the field, but no where near me. They did not respond to some soft yelps, and they were moving away. In desperation, I tried a gobble on a mouth call. All three stopped and turned and headed in my direction. At 35 yards he went down.

I have a Knight and Hale call, a Hale Fire, but I'm not happy with the way I work it. Cannot get the rhythm down. But the mouth call works well. Move it as far back as you can tolerate and breathe "chicka, chicka, chockaw" and you will be surprised at the results.

I will always keep the gobble call in the arsenal.
