Good luck, put us on the board!!!
Late yesterday afternoon, I finally convinced my boss that not hunting opening morning was damn-near illegal, so she said she'd ok it if it was 'only this once' and I agreed to get to work by noon. I assured her that this would be the only opening day for turkey season in Alabama this year that I would ask to come in late for, and I'd be at work by noon.
I was hunting a private tract (maybe 125ac) surrounded by public management land. I've hunted here a good bit over the last 2 seasons, and these birds are tough! They don't gobble often (none today) and are a pain to work when they do start talking. The hens keep them plenty occupied around here...
I setup before light on a 2 or 3 acre field where I have seen several birds in the past working through off of the roost. I heard nothing but crows all morning, and at 7:45 or so, I had 3 hens work the far edge of the field, maybe 200yds away. They checked out the decoy spread as they just fed through. I clucked a time or two and yelped once, and they looked up, but then kept on going. I yelped again, got the same response, and I figured they weren't interested, so I would let them leave, and I'd move to the other side of the property.
At 8:15 I moved to setup on a long cutout road with small clover patches at each end. The only bird I have killed on this place was taken on this road, so I figured why not? At about 9:15 I caught movement at the end of the road, of course, as I was starting to pack up. I made out 2 turkeys, and I didn't make a noise until they started my way. They did take a few steps my way, and then stopped to check out the decoys, and started feeding again but back to where they came from, straight away from me. I clucked, they looked up, and then went back to feeding towards me. It turned out that it another 2 hens and they came up the road to about 75yds and cut back into the woods to do whatever it is that they do. I gave them a good 15 minutes to get deeper into the woods, and I headed out to get to work. Overall, it was a great hunt. Saw 5 birds, got to talk a little turkey, and got to come in late to the office and not eat up vacation time. I have only been waiting 320 days until today, and it was a good morning...
