Title: Need a starting point for an 870
Post by: C J Stahly on March 17, 2014, 02:28:51 PM
I need a place to start with my 3 inch 870.  I want to shoot fed hw 6s or 7s but not sure what choke to start with.
Please email christopher.stahly@gmail.com or text 765 702 3281 as I don't get on here much

I think Jelly Head .660 is the most popular choke for that gun.  I've had excellent results with lead and HTL through that choke/gun combination over the years.  2 of my hunting buddies have a 3" 870, both with Jelly Head .660 - One shoots Nitro Company with devastating results and the other shoots turkey thug 6's with great patterns at 40 yards.

I currently shoot a 870 SM with Jelly Head .665 and 3.5 Long Beard XR's #6 and getting great hunting patterns.

Hastings .665 non-ported. Best choke I have shot for Fed HW 7's.

I have a Jellyhead .665 in my 870 SM and love it. If you are shooting Fed HW #7's, Trulock makes choke tubes designed for that shell. I don't know much about them but it might be something to look into. Good luck.

Thanks guys.  I really truly want to shoot nitros but figure the HWs would be next.

With the H13 shells (MBs and 6s) I bought a few years ago I got AMAZING results, but with the newer shells, I have dropped in density bad.  Just really unsatisfied with how the new shells are doing.  I think 160 was about my best with the newer 6s and 150 with MBs.  I was getting at least 50 more hits in the 10 with the old ones through my PG670.

I might have to get a JH and bite the bullet and get some Nitros.

Yeah, Nitro Company recommends the Jelly Head .660 for 2009 and older 870's.  I don't take this long of shots personally but I have seen the older 870 3" with JH .660 and Nitro H321 kill a turkey dead at a ranged 80 yards.   They're wicked...

Good luck on whatever you decide!

I have 26" barrel on o 870 SM and I use the .665 JH. Been shooting #6 hevishot they shoot great. Recently shot some 3.5 #4s in the new winchester LB they are awesome. I think if you stay with a JH choke you can;t go wrong.
