I live in the southwest part of Virginia (Dickenson county) and for anyone who's been here you would know its all straight up and straight down! The turkey are thick but hard to hunt. I love it tho, It makes it harder to hunt cause you can't just circle around to any spot you want when you know where some birds are at. Your choices are very limited! That's what makes it more fun and challenging!
Just wondered if I shared the mountain birds with anyone in this great country?
Stay calm, Go turkey hunting!
I regulary hunt some steep stuff in SE Oklahoma and some of the bigger Ozark hills in SW Missouri.
seems like we hunt them up hill both ways here in Arizona. it's not uncommon to climb 1000 feet or more in elevation.

Hello neighbor. Don't hunt Dickenson but have hunted Scott, tazewell and Russell. Spend most of my time in bland and wythe now. Some very rough country. Lots of places you got to grab trees, limbs or anything you can get a hold of to pull yourself up. Most people don't understand just cause you can hear him doesn't mean you can walk right to him. It might take 2 hours to get to him. Rocks rolling 75+ yards tend to spook birds

I hunt some pretty rough terrain at times. Makes it difficult to maneuver, but I like it because the same terrain can be used to your advantage.

i spend two weeks hunting big walker mountain in bland every year! Great hunting out there!
I am a Virginia native/resident as well from Fauquier co. I have only hunted foothills and farmland, never the mountains. I have hunted several other states as well but never in mountain terrain. I have thought about driving down to Bath or Highland co to hunt the NF there, but have not made it there yet. Would love to trade a hunt! Your picks are beautiful.
One of my most successful tips I could give is to get above them... in my experience hunting southeast Kentucky and east Tennessee is they are very hard to call downhill it's worth the hike even if it takes you a while to get above them even if that means not getting there before fly down

I was born and raised in Haysi what part of Dickinson County you from? I love the mountain birds one way I kill lot of them is when I find one that is using same mountain regular I do everything I can to not spook him and try to find out where he is roosting but more importantly where he is headed then I get above him before I make my first call and most always use scratching in leaves to go with calling seems to be very effective.

I agree if a bird is above u on a steep hill or mountain its very hard to call him down....I live and hunt the foot hills in Tennessee and I try to stay on ridges tops . Finding a good strut zone and wait him out has work good for me

im also in haysi! Wow didn't think I'd get a post that close!
I live in Fauquier county.,..learned to hunt turkeys in the mountains and don't have any desire to go back. It's a lot of work to get the necessary position on mountain birds. God bless ya chasing them in that country day in and day out.
Beautiful pics!

[/quote] I'm not living there now but my parents do and most of my family are there or close by Grundy/Prater area I have some areas that I'll go back and hunt they have been seeing good winter flock come through plus all the deer that hang by the garden. We live up around Bee between the gas wells and logging lot of deer have shown up over last few years
I live in Southwest Virginia, out in the sticks in a place called Moccasin Valley. We hunt the Clinch Mountain here and it's billy goat country. :toothy12: We're in Russell county.

Hunt a lot in the west central Blue ridge of Va. I love getting in the mountains.

North central West Virginia here. I hunt "hill" birds. It get's you in shape hunting them but at least it is hard for them to circle around you. :TooFunny:
If you get lucky, you find one that roosts over the creek and you don't have to climb up after them but I usually do. Good luck.
Not in VA, but 95% is done in the SC mountains. Some of those pictures look very similar to my hunting spots. It can be very challenging at times, but when it all comes together it is very rewarding.
I hunt the mountains here in PA and also have been huntin the mountains in the Daniel Boone NF in Kentucky the last few years it's the only way I know :icon_thumright:
I hunt the Mts of WV,,,,4th generation to chase turkey,,,
With that being said,,,it is always better to be up hill from them,,,but have killed several I have called down hill..
I have found that they tend to roast in the same areas,,,rather in the mts or flat land..So with that in mind try to be where you need to be when they start gobblin,
Call them up close and shoot them in the face@ longbeads

Been turkey hunting the Mts. 44 years, in WV and VA, I live in Mercer Co WV, and hunt McDowell, Pocahontas, Mingo, Wyoming, Raleigh, Monroe, and Summers WV. Hunted and still hunt VA, Bath, Highland, Bland, Tazewell, and Giles Co.
My favored Co, in VA to hunt is Bath Co, with Bland a close 2nd. but good hunting in the other counties also. Not saying Bath and Bland are the best, just my favored. In WV Pocahontas is not the best by far but is one of my favored places to hunt. In WV Mingo and McDowell Co. might have the most turkey?

Great picture!
I just moved back to Mississippi after spending the past 3 springs hunting the mountains of the Cherokee National Forest in Carter, Sullivan, and Washington County, Tennessee. These mountain pictures are making me sick. There is just something about standing on a high ridge at daylight while gobbles echo off the surrounding mountains that makes you feel like a million bucks.
Yep, I am close to you as well. I am in the mountains of West Virginia, in Mercer County.
I hunt the "Big Woods" of NC Pa. Most times you hunt up or down. Not alot of flat woods or fields here.

I hunt pa so yes on the mountains or hollers
I grew up in WV and have climbed a many of hills to kill a few.
I too hunt the mountains here in Southeast Kentucky. Ain't nothing like starting the morning off before daylight walking straight up. Like a few people mentioned earlier, it's all about staying on their level, or above them. It can be done, but rarely have I called one down hill.
There is just nothing like hunting turkeys in the mountains!!! I have grown up hunting birds here in the mountains of WV and have been fortunate to be able to go to VA the last few years and hunt turkeys with my good buddy in some beautiful mountains there!! Just cant beat it!!!

Raised in Pocahontas County WV .. only because PC didn't have a doctor that delivered babies at the time of my birth.. so Mom had to find one in Hot Springs :) I hunted both growing up.. I now live in NOVA but still go back to hunt in the spring a few days.. I love those mountains..

p.s. I'm glad you posted this, I was wanting to know of mountain birds from all over not only from my surrounding area. It's great getting to see all the places!
I've got a few farms and fields, where I could most certain kill more birds and deer, but the mountains are where I like to be.
Glad to see others who enjoy it as well, I enjoy the pictures too.
Crazy to see all these Dickenson co. folks on here. I lived in Buchanan co. Va and Pike co. Ky. Still hunt in Eastern Ky. That area on the Ky Va line is steep country. Always had a good time hunting there.
