Sorry GuessWho - had another moment of weakness before season & watched another huntin' show!! ;) This question came up in the show...
*BUT* great question - curious to hear your answers... I'd say for me, early on, I preferred to hunt alone; began hunting with a buddy, but he wouldn't let me call much! So, I hunted alone for years, until I moved back to Alabama in 2004 & began hunting with my cousin, and got another buddy of mine into it. Now, I really like hunting with someone else; the experience just seems more fun, although I've learned it's a bit tougher to get 2 folks coordinated on a hunt!
Thoughts? Pros/Cons?
Oh man, to me there is just nothing like turkey hunting with a buddy!! With filming hunts now we almost never hunt alone anymore which makes it fun, but even if I werent filming I would definitely prefer to have a buddy there.
My two best hunts last year were with two of my best friends with me. The year before that my best was with a great freind of mine and my dad. Just having them there and sharing those moments together and talking about God and how awesome he is that he allows us to enjoy his wonderful creation like we do makes it so much more gratifying to me. I have hunted alone quite a bit and have killed several birds alone and it was alot of fun, but just nothing like having a couple of buddies there to make those memories with! To me, thats what its all about!
I enjoy both, but I do most of my turkey hunting with my BIL.
Now that my son is off at college the majority of my hunting is alone. I will hook up with a friend very occasionally but not often.
When I'm deer hunting I prefer to be alone hands down. But turkey hunting is a buddy sport to me. I do enjoy hunting alone but enjoy it even more when I have a good friend along
I like to take my grandsons when I can but otherwise by myself. Partly due to the private land I hunt....I'm very protective of the locations and relationships with landowners.
I like hunting with a buddy. But most of my buddy's don't like hunting with me.
I like both. Use up there tags first lol

ROFL - and why is that, man??? You crack me up, dude! :)
I enjoy both. It's almost like the Ginger or Mary Ann question.

I'd hunt with you any day! :icon_thumright:
I enjoy hunting with someone more. but I am more successful by myself.

What are the causes of you not being as successful with someone else? Just curious; I would agree with your statement, too; there are things you do, by yourself, that's tough to do w/another hunter along with you.
A well-tuned pair will murder more turkeys than a lethal solo hunter will any day of the week. Tactically, you have more options available to you (ie drop back, team calling, etc) and you can cover a wider degree of area on your set-up with two guns than you can with one.
That being said, I prefer hunting solo over hunting with 99% of other people unless I'm with my brother.
Honestly, I don't care to hunt with most people and a lot of people don't care to hunt with me. We're critical of mistakes and are obsessive in our pursuit of flawless hunt.
I like it either way but there tends to be more talking when I have a buddy. Carries quite a way in the woods.

In my state we are only allowed two birds in the spring. I can pretty much do that on my own. I hunt solo 99% of the time.
Depends on the buddy.
I love hunting with my wife and my kids. I am (kinda) patient with them and we have good times. Other than that, I'm better off alone. Others say I need a shock collar and that I walk too far and too fast but that's what I do and I enjoy it.
I really like to tag team birds. Gotta admit though the older I get I do like some solitude now and again.

I don't have many "buddies" that are died-in-the-wool turkey hunters. Only one and he wants to do ALL the callin' and I do the shooting. Works for me and another day we trade-off. I also hunt WYO., Montana and SD and its hard to find anyone that has the time to be gone from home for several days. The landowners where I hunt there don't care about "hunting" the birds the way we do. They shoot a bird in the backyard when they see one and then go back to work.
I probally wont be hunting by myself much longer as the years are adding-up.

this one fits me too. most of the time I'm helping (i.e. calling in the birds) friends and youth hunters in units I don't have a tag in. then I take my turn in the latter part of the season enjoying the forest without all the hunters. This year my hunt starts on May 2nd and ends on May 22nd and I will not be hunting until the 18th. However I have four plus youth hunters to take out starting April 18th then seven other friends to take out from April 25th until May 17th.
I love to call for others, but when I have the gun I want to be alone, me and the turkey.
The only person I like to hunt with is my Dad. If not him thin I prefer to hunt alone. Dad knows what I am going to do and I know what he will do when set up on a gobbler. Anybody else I don't know them and they don't know me. nothing against a buddy, I just do not have one that I trust on a gobbler.

:agreed:
If I am in KILL mode alone is best. With that said I have a good time w friends as well and it really depends on what the goal is.
It takes quite bit of time and effort to get comfortable hunting with someone else. That said, I like to call and move around by myself and not worry about someone else and what they are wanting to do so I mostly hunt by myself.

I've hunted with 4 different friends and family over the years. We had good times but were rarely successfull. I've been going solo the last few years and got my best bird ever 2 years ago.
That's tough. Would pick by myself for now.
I've almost always hunted by myself.
Mostly by myself now, with dad and wife gone to greener pastures and son moved to Cali. I kinda enjoy the solitude at times.
Gman
I prefer to hunt with somebody. It's just more enjoyable for me nowadays. Now if there is a turkey that needs killin just let me be and I'll be back in a little while with a gobbler slung over my shoulder.
Joe
By myself..
its one of the good things about turkey hunting is hunting with someone just have to find someone who doesn't yap all the time and is like minded, Me and my buddies camp first week of turkey season and hunt and have a ball
Loner myself, but???I am haveing the time of my life with my nephew, what an adrenaine rush it is to see a kid get ready to pull the trigger on his first deer or turkey, almost like my first.
I like to do both but I hunt alone till I get one under the belt every year. I am way more proficient hunting alone than with a friend.
Alone
I had a buddy that I'd hunt with but he moved back to his home state! Now that my son is into turkey hunting I really like taking him! He really eats it up and I love trying to teach him everything I know about our great sport. But if I can't take him I'd rather hunt alone, I just like going out there and doing my thing! Guiding is fun also I guess, but when I'm going to fill my tags I wanna hunt alone!
I prefer to share the hunt with a buddy for the most part but when I really have the urge to kill one I want to go alone.
Deer huntin is mostly my alone time, turkey huntin is done with a buddy
I Like and prefer to hunt with a buddy. Just more fun buddy hunting in my opinion.
more successful by myself but partner hunts are fun
With a buddy for sure!
I like hunting alone, but also enjoy a friend or family. can't beat sharing this time and a cup of hot chocolate with my grandson in our blind.
I have way more fun hunting with someone but I seem to be bad luck because my brother has missed 3 of last 4 with me. I do kill more alone for some reason probably because I will walk into places no one else will and not as much yapping
Most of my buddy's are deer and coon hunters and I can't get them into the woods for birds so I've always hunted alone. I'm going to take my wife this turkey season and I have two sons that are too young right now but I'm looking forward to takin all of them with me! I'm sure I'll still have my solo hunts cause it's the only time I get to just be in the woods alone without distraction of normal life! There's nothing more peaceful to me than layin back in a bush and listening to the sounds if nature.
Stay calm, Go turkey hunting!
The problem I have encountered with the guys I hunt with, is they like to hunt in blinds, and my turkey hunting has evolved from that.
I used to love to hunt with my FIL, but he likes to be in a blind, I have a buddy that I taught how to hunt birds, but once I shared my spots with him, he neglected to share a prime piece of property with me, so my hunting with him has cooled a bit.
My son's Babe Ruth coach who is a good friend of mine could be a good hunting buddy. He has potential.
However, my absolute favorite hunting buddy is my son.
So long story short, unless I am with Harrison, I would rather hunt alone.
I almost always hunt alone and I really enjoy it but its also mostly all I know. I do alot of local hunting and also go on several road trips per year all solo. Im sure I would hunt with a partner more if I had any friends that werent Pansies and could actually go hunt rather than be told what they can and cant do by their Girl Friends.
like a buddy, my son . like to go with friends too. Limit on tags so now i like to sit in the blind and let everyone else get their turkey that way i get to enjoy more. Doesn't matter to me if i get one, i just enjoy the show more now. Have shot plenty by myself and others for 25 years without a blind, use one for around 10 years of and on now. Fidgety friends and kids come along enjoy too. Go by myself, plenty.
Don't know about no evolution.?
It's a one man game, but I am glad that most folks buddy up.
If I'm going for fun then i'll hunt with someone. If I'm serious i go alone. 99% of my hunting is alone. Deer or turkey. I seem to do things a lot more differently than some of my friends. Which is fine since everyone has their own comfort zone.
I mostly hunt with my uncle who I have hunted with for almost 30 years. He is a diehard turkey hunter and we hunt almost everyday of the season unless I'm hunting out of state or it's windy (he hates the wind due to hearing loss). He is never late and always ready to go but lacks patience at times and we have to talk often while working birds so I can tell him what's going on and keep in pointed in the right direction. My 2 nephews just moved to South Dakota last year with their family and really miss hunting with them as they were turning into good hunters. Will be going out to hunt with them end of April. On the rare occasion I hunt alone, I really enjoy it and score more times than not.
I prefer hunting with my dad. We have turkey hunted together for 15 years and I think I've only gone twice without him in that period of time.
Depends on who the someone is!
I have buddies, I have hunting buddies, and I have turkey hunting buddies!
For instance, I have a really good buddy from high school that is a good turkey hunter, but we just don't jive in the turkey woods, and we both know it.

:z-guntootsmiley: Now that ^^^^ is what I call a great first post right there!!! :wagon:
Both but if the pressure is on.....alone.
I would guess that it is about 50-50
I enjoy battling a bird, just him and me,but I also enjoy having a buddy along, always seem to have more fun.
I enjoy hunting solo, due to the fact i know when to move and have the patience. I'm very particular when it comes to turkey hunting. Ducks not so much.
I have varying levels of turkey hunting. If I am trying to teach someone how to turkey hunt, I will take them and let them do some calling so I can give them instruction. Those trips are fun but I have no real expectations of success, although I am surprised at how often it works out with a dead gobbler.
I also have a few friends that are experienced hunters and good callers. They know what to say to a gobbler, and when to say it. I enjoy hunting with them because we kill birds pretty often and they rarely make any glaring mistakes in their calling or woods skills.
I also have some friends that are terrible at it, even though they have turkey hunted for years. They don't put in the effort to learn how to call, and their woods skills suck big-time. I sometimes take those guys hunting with me because I know they will never kill a gobbler without help, but I prefer they didn't call and then just do exactly as I say and then pull the trigger if we get a bird to come in. Unfortunately, they are so inclined to screw up a hunt that it tries my patience to deal with them.
Finally, when I get to the point where I am wanting to kill a gobbler myself,...and especially if it is getting late in the season,...I generally want to hunt alone. Whether I succeed or fail, I have no one else to blame either on except for myself,...and I prefer it that way.
I like to hunt by myself until I limit out then enjoy taking other people and call a turkey in for them. May sound a little selfish but I just like doing my own calling. I hunt every year with a friend from out of state and I just do not like his style of calling. He kills his share of the birds but he calls too much in my opinion. I just enjoy doing my own thing. I do enjoy taking new people to the sport and younger people that have never killed a turkey. That is more enjoyable then shooting one myself.
Both
Both for me, I like to have someone around when I bag a bird. Cell images not as much fun :TooFunny:
I prefer to hunt by myself. That being said I really enjoy taking my wife and grandson when I can.
I guide. I thoroughly enjoy watching others harvest birds. That being said. I hunt solo. For me, hunting even with my best buds, is like dragging dead weight.
I like hunting alone because I hunt based on my instinct and don't care for someone second guessing me.
Good things happen when you hunt Turkeys alone! Now waterfowl hunting, thats when I want a good team around me!
I called in a bird this year for a first timer. What a blast. But most times I hunt alone. I enjoy the time and find it very spiritual. Plus most of my buddies can't keep up with me. Plus I only have a few buds I would show my spots. Public land Florida you can't trust anyone. Lol
