I'm as guilty as the next guy but with all the talk about how far your gun will shoot, and then all the coin we drop on calls to call them in close...how close was your closest kill?
I'll start, 6 steps.
I was almost attacked so I had to shoot 12 yards.
My closet last year was roughly 10-12 feet. That's about as close as I've ever killed one.
Maybe three steps and instead of I almost missed I'll state that I barely hit.
2nd bird I ever killed about 3or 4 yrds he caught me sleeping and got between me and my decoy before I knew he was there. that was many years ago but have never forgot him also my first double bearded bird just about took his head off
1st gobbler shot at about 10yards. Just about took the head right off.....
10-12 feet
6 normal steps. Blew his dang beard off just about. Missed one at 4 steps last year
12 yards. I try to shoot them about 20 to 25 but he got close and just popped up over the ridgetop. I certainly did not need my 3.5" 12 ga. that morning. LOL
About 15 yards and almost missed. He came in on the other side of some brush and I had to wait to get a clear shot. I don't like them that close, bigger margin of error on my part. I'd say the majority of the ones I've been lucky enough to take for a ride in my truck have been killed at 20-30 yards.
Three steps.. :fud: :turkey2:
200 yards....course all I shoot is Longbeard XR's.
Sorry I couldn't resist that!

6 steps
10 steps.
I once had an assist that was 6 steps. The bird wouldnt break strut. My buddie figgured he better shoot. Wow! you talk about a feather storm :TooFunny:
Is this all on Public Land ?
I was slippin down a branch one morning about 11am. The branch ran thru some timber into a pasture.I stopped about 50 yards from the pasture and cut on a diaphragm to see if any birds would answer from the pasture. Two birds gobbled less than 30 feet in front of me behind some weeds. I quickly sat down on the bank with no cover. Five or so seconds later both birds poped thru the weeds on the other side and I picked a head and fired. Shot was the width of the branch, about 12-15 feet. Very lucky I didn't miss.
About 7 feet for me on a Rio in Kansas
5 yards. It was in the fall. Broken flock, jake was running right at me.
7 steps
very,very close
10 yards.
4 steps. Just about beheaded him.
About 15 feet. The damage was extreme.
I have killed a couple near the 10 step range and missed one at about 6 steps....talk about frustrating.

I know a majority of the closest kills I have had were on public, but I predominately hunt public. The closest I've ever shot (the one I missed at 6 steps) was on a private field.
Shot or caught?
My closest kill is 12 feet, but there was also another gobbler within 6-8 feet of me when I shot the one at 12 feet.
Missed one at 5 steps last year.
8 yards
Quite a few at 10-15 feet....
mudhen
Maybe 4 feet from the end of the barrel. Good thing I had that 3 1/2" nitro load and a Indian Creek!! Lol
about 10 yards
First turkey I ever shot was the closest, about ten yards with my grandfathers old Mossberg 12 gauge with a 3 1/2 inch load. :z-guntootsmiley: . lets just say it was plenty overkill and that bird definitely had one heck of a headache!

Wrong that bird didn't feel a thing.
15 yrds
Killed a couple at <5 yds but one came off the roost early and on a dead run across a field. I was at a tree right up against an old barbed wire fence. Well he came running right at me and backlit by the field, I could not see his beard so I held my fire. The only thing that stopped him was the fence. He spun a circle and stopped sideways, longbeard!, I literally just pointed at his wattles and fired just feet away and just did clip him.
Killed two different birds at 5 steps.
8 yards :fud:

I MISSED one last year at about 3-4 yards....he wouldnt come out of strutt and had hens all around him so I was scared to make a sound. Blew two feathers out of his fan and he lived to tell the tale :TrainWreck1:
The closest I've ever actually killed one was about 5yds.
Last year; 10-15 yards (or so); had 2 gobbling on a small hardwoods rise in a swampy area, stalked 'em, and blasted one thru the brush as they were about to fly off.
Several years ago was set up 5 yds off of a powerline. Had a hen yelp interrupt my late morning siesta. Cracked my eyes open and the hen was 10 yds to my left but had a full fan in my face just inside woodline. Brought gun to my shoulder just as tom dropped into half strut. Stone dead without even a twitch. 4 yards max.
Had one walk within 2-3 steps and he got it to about 5-6 before I shot he was walking left to right...
