Title: Box call sound question? Mahogany/purpleheart
Post by: Heller on February 25, 2014, 07:11:43 PM
Has anyone heard or played a box call with a mahogany box with a purpleheart lid? Could you describe the sound of it? Is it a good combo?

I have a SS purpleheart over maple.....it has a really nice front end  and the most raspy backend of any of  my other box calls.  I would imagine if you had mahogany box it might mellow it out a touch....but purpleheart it gonna still be raspy on the backend.

I believe that Billy White's "Hustlin Hen" has those specs. Definitely a turkey in his box.

Mahogany with purpleheart lid is a great combo.  I carry one in my vest always.  It's single sided with the thumb groove for great excited cutting and content clucking.  Yelps and purrs great too.

You got a very hard wood over a soft wood.  Should be raspy depending on the builder.  I have one purpleheart over mahogany and one tigerwood over mahogany.  Both are raspy and make sharp clucks and cutts.

I have that combo from Bill Baublit and really like it. It's pretty raspy. I'm sure he would play one over the phone for you.
