Title: 870 SM .665 Jellyhead
Post by: chrmayo on March 12, 2011, 11:28:10 PM
I know all of you reccommend shooting the .660 JH in the 870. I already have a .665 JH a friend gave me. Nitros website shows the 2 1/4 oz loads with the .660 and shows the 517t 2 7/16 oz through a JH .665. My dad has 4 of the 517t loads left from his 835 so I have been thinkin about trying them out. I have heard on the boards here that the 517t is the least efficient load but the numbers they are advertising isnt really saying that. What do you guys think the numbers would be with the 517t and JH .665 combo? My gun hasnt been fired yet and I have deep cleaned the barrel but not polished it yet. Thanks in advance.

With Nitros I don't think you will be disappointed either way.

You will probably get somewhere in the 260s, maybe even 275, however if you opend the choke of your 870 up to a .680, you would likely break 300+ with ease. However that being said, if you shot the H5103A 2 1/4 oz loads, with the choke you have, you will likely get 300 in a 10" circle at 40 yds, meaning the H517t is an inefficient load.

Every gun is different.  We have found the H517t 4x5x7 or 2x5x7 with a .665 Rhino or Primos Jelly head choke will produce 280-320 pellets in a 10" at 40 yards.  However, if you have a .660 choke Rhino or Primos Jelly head choke, we would recommend H510C 4x5x7 or 2x5x7.  With that combination, you are looking at 250-320 pellets in a 10" at 40 yards.  I know that I have talked to several guys that get well over that with each combination.  It depends on your gun.

I shoot the H517 4x5x7 out of my 870 with a JH 660 and got 354 in the 10" circle at 40 yards.  With that being said it does have a 21" barrel so it needs to be choked a little tighter.  I havent never tried a 665 or a 670 but i dont think it will be any better. Have a good one  :z-guntootsmiley:
