Title: Mouth Call Purring
Post by: MouthCaller on February 17, 2014, 09:38:59 PM
How long did it take you to learn how to do it well? I can do everything on a mouth call except gobble and purr... I've tried doing it before and I just watched some more YouTube how-to's on it I just can't do it and it frustrating!

I can barely get the purr working with fluttering the front of my tongue. I've always had much better success "gargling" the back of my tongue.

Roll your r's like your Mexican, that's how I do it and sometimes when I'm all worked up cuz I'm trying to get em to come a few more steps I gotta flutter my lips. I can't purr the greatest but turkey's aren't judges! Thank goodness!

I understand your frustration.  Some guys are just awesome.  I'm hit and miss.  I'm like you practicing to try and make purrs without having to think about it.  I even find myself trying to do it without a call so I can concentrate on what my tongue and throat are doing.  Good luck.  If you find the magic, let us know.

LX_Trkyhntr described it best for me. If you can growl like Roy Orbison in the song Pretty Woman you can purr on a mouth call. It'll take a little practice but once you get the principle you'll catch on pretty quickly.

Was Roy Orbison a turkey hunter?   :TooFunny:
I just watched this You Tube video and now it makes sense.  It's gonna take some practice...

;D...I never quite understood what people meant when they explained how to "gargle" purr but this made sense to me. It's certainly more realistic than the "lip flutter" purr I used to do.

I learned how to use a mouth call in 1998 and it wasn't until last year that I figured out the throat purr.  I could do the lip flutter, but didn't like it.  I always purred with my natural voice.  I'm still trying to get better at it.  I have found I purr best on ghost cuts and two reed v cuts, although the Gooserbat Heckler will do a decent purr as well.

Here is a little video clip I did several years ago. Maybe it will help.

I was actually watching that yesterday before I saw this thread.  Good video!!

I have just very recently learned how to throat purr, but I am having trouble getting the "hollow" sound. Any advice?

Have you tried using your natural voice ? I've been using mine for about 40 years now. You can purr as soft and low as you want.

JOE! YOU THE MAN! That's the first video I've watched and actually got a purr or of my call by trying what you did... I cannot lip or tongue flutter but I get a growly low toned purr now instead of nothing... Will work on it some more and make a video when I get it down THANKS!!!

I've just posted an instructional YouTube lesson on purring: http://youtu.be/a6ZMyzxhOe4

I use the gargling method to purr; but, I know several guys that flutter their tongue and/or their lips, and it sounds good.  Try 'em all & see what works for you.  I prefer to purr on a slate!  :)

I just blow air across the back of my tongue and let it vibrate to make the diaphragm purr. I'm not great, but it sounds pretty decent. Better than a lot of the guys I hunt with. Some other friends are awesome at it.

I think Joe sounded the best with the gargling method. That's what I use, I just didn't know the term for it. I also don't sound as good as Joe. Guess I need to practice more.

It can take a while, try all methods I got a lot of good use out of joes video as well as Jason Ellis' video mouth call magic.

Just keep at it

I purr from the back side of my tounge not the front. And gobble more with my lips and a gargle type sound. Seems to work very well.

I purr by rolling and vibrating the front part of my tongue. It seems to work very well. I have coaxed several big gobblers those extra few yards using that purr. To be honest I never really had a problem learning to purr on a mouth call. I use double and triple frame calls and can purr on them without any problem. IMO a purr sounds the best on a pot call but I don't like to have to move to do it so I use my mouth calls.
