Title: Barrel length
Post by: hogman22 on February 17, 2014, 04:56:13 PM
Im in the market for a new turkey gun. I was wondering what length of barrel do you guys think does the best job? I have my eye on a mossy 835 with either a 20" or a 22" barrel.(it may be 24", I'll have to go back and look)

I have a 24 inch on my 835 and a 26 (i think) on my 870.  Both have extended tubes and do well.  I have know experience with very short barrels, but lots of guys like them because of a slight reduction in weight and carrying ease.

I shoot Win supreme XX 2 oz 6's (red shell) out of the 835 with a Mossy extend xtrafull choke and average upper 140's in a 10 inch at 40 yards, best is 157.

I do not have experience with anything shorter than 24". My 835, 935 Stoeger 3500 and BPS 10 are all 24's.

I like this length...handles well, not too long with extended chokes.

If you add a 1 1/2" to 2" extended turkey choke to the 20 " you are really at 22" so it might not be much different.

I have had great results with a 24" barrel, but I sure would like to try out a super short 18.5" barrel.

I've got an 870 turkey/predator with a 21" barrel and it is the best shooting guns I've ever owned. It carries well and it's very easy to maneuver in tight cover. I've had 24" 26" and 28" and they all perform well but tend to hang op in vines and birars while hunting.

I shot a winchester 1300 with a 22" barrel for over 20 years. It was easy to handle and shot very well,I also had a 30" barrel for it but after using the short one I couldn't make myself put the long one back on

Depends on what you want to do.  I like to shoot and punch paper and follow the whole 10" at 40 yards thing preseason.   I am a hunter first though.  For me that is a 24" barrel pre choke max.  I really like my supermag with a 23" pipe.  With choke it is probably pushing 25" plus.   I don't think I could go any longer.
