Title: Let's get a consensus
Post by: sugarray on March 12, 2011, 03:48:32 PM
So, there has been debate about short barrel, long barrel and the patterns with the different chokes.  My 22", short barrel absolutely does not like the Rem SF.  I am thinking of getting the SSX in .550 or a SumToy in .560.  Just would like to see some 40 yd numbers from the SumToy.  There is a fairly big cost difference.  Also, I am wanting no more than 120 at 40 yds, this is for my son.  Really either load is good, as I don't think he will shoot past 30 yds.

What do you think?  Try to sum up all the info we have.

I was thinking the same thing.. My long barrel HATES 570 constriction chokes RSF< Undertaker, PG Tempest..

Much Much better with tighter chokes..

The two Short barreled guns HATE 570 constriction chokes

They like the SSX

I think Barrel length plays a part in the pattern equation. I shot today and my patterns were a bit better than yours using the same choke and loads. I think the SSX likes short and long barrels. I think you will be pleased with your results with the SSX Sugarray. If you look around you can sometimes the SSX chokes pretty cheap.

If i run into any deals on these chokes i'll pm you.

i have said it before and i'll say it again, long barrel more open choke, short barrel tighter choke.

You are certainly welcome to look over my 40 yard Sum Toy numbers on my posts. The Remington bbl is 26", Brng Inv+ is 28" and Mossberg is 22".

About the only absolutes about barrels, chokes and shells,is that you absolutely need to try to be sure . I am not willing to try every possible combo either.I can say that with the SumToy choke I have had more doable patterns with  different guns using lead and HTL combinations in many different shells.

Ive tried IC and swarm in tight chokes with bad results out of my 21" 870. The jellyhead is best so far. Shot 7 or 8 different loads and the jelly head with Hvy 13 7's or nitro 4,5,7 are best FWIW

20ga 870 28" barrel with SSX .550 consistently gets 150+ hits in a 10" circle at 40 yards.

I think it really depends on the gun honestly. I've shot the IC .555 and Rem SF with H13 7's, Dunn's loads, and TSS 9's with good results from both

IC .555
TSS 1 5/8oz 9's- 316
TSS 1 7/16oz 9's- 260
H13 7's- 181
Dunn's- 169

Rem SF
TSS 1 5/8oz 9's- 260
TSS 1 7/16oz 9's- 210
H13 7's- 159
Dunn's- 145

I'll probably hunt with the Rem SF for the most part unless I get a choke from SumToy to try with the TSS

Both by 870 and 11-87 20ga guns have 26" barrels, so I can't be much help... Both shoot my PG .570 and the SSX .550 well... The SSX is consistently about 15-20 pellets in a 10" better than the PG in both guns, with h13 7's.  However, the 20" pattern has different characteristics.  The SSX has a tighter core than my PG, but the PG makes up for it if you count 20" circle.

My short barreled Rem 1100 loves the RSF.  It hated the Swarm .553 & the C-N-C .565.  I have yet to try my Hastings .566. Who here has a ported barrel besides me?

My 870 with a 28" barrel likes the RSF better than the SSX with H13 #7's.  I was right around 100 hits with the SSX, but the RSF put around the 130's consistently.

Here's one I saved from last year, 133 hits.  I cut this out after finding the densest part of the pattern.  I didn't shoot at a 10" circle, but the POI was pretty much dead on for this shot.
