Title: Remington 870 choke advice
Post by: mmporter1 on February 11, 2014, 05:29:40 PM
I just bought a Remington 870 short barrel turkey edition for this turkey season.  I am either getting a Jelly head, a rhino, or and Indian creek.  I do not know which load I should shoot either.  Does anyone have an suggestions on which choke I should buy and which load I should shoot for this particular gun???

DEEP CLEAN IT............The jellyhead in .660 or .665 will do good. The carlsons non ported chokes shoot great for $25 and made in USA. I have had 6 different 21" remingtons. They are like women you dont know what they will like till you try it lol. The new winchester longbeard is the ticket on lead loads. We are getting above hevi numbers with this load. Go look at the pattern section it will give you a good starting point on choke/load.Good luck with your new gun and good luck buddy...

I toted a 21" barreled 870 last year. It was wicked with a .660 JellyHead and 3" MagBlends. I agree with scdxt these short barreled Remingtons are each picky in their own ways. But I would start with the JellyHead and try several loads before changing chokes.

I've shot several loads and chokes in my 870 SM with a 24" barrel.  The best performing chokes have been Jellyhead .660, Kicks .665 (lead loads), and right now i'm using a Hevi choke at .662 constiction with Hevi 7's and Magblends.  I shot my best pattern to date with the Hevi choke and Hevi 7's right around 270 pellets in the ten at 40 yds.

I have done 283 shot in the 10" at a taped 40yds with my 870 Express 3" 28" barrel gun with the rem Ventilator .655 choke using the Hevi-13 3" 2oz #7's.  I would say it would work very well in a shorter barrel 870.

You can buy one of these chokes for about $24 shipped to your door from the link below.

No choke I know of for that price will touch it in the 870 shotguns.

Another vote for the Jellyhead .660. I have yet to see a bad pattern from this combination.

Well, I will vote for the Sumtoy .665, Jellyhead .660 and TruGlo SSX .643. No particular order. I mostly just shoot lead these days. But the with the Mag Blends the JellyHead .660 was killer.

Your choke will depend on the shells you want to shoot lead vs. heavier than lead.  Federals with the flight control do not prefer a ported choke.  For me my .665 Jellyhead works with lead and HTL.  It is equal to the Rhino .660 I tried.

Yup, my results were indentical with a 870SM/ Ventilator .655/ Hevi 7's.
This combo will also turn amazing patterns with all of the Winchester 3" lead 6's. Haven't shot the Win LB's through it yet.
