Granted they will not be as sporty as the HTL /TSS #7-#9 pellets with 1.5-1 9/16 oz. loads.
However they will show those new to 20 gauge patterns just what #4,#5,and #6 lead loads do through certain shell/choke combinations. For those with close encounters, they know that even lead 20 gauge loads are plenty adequate for the average 20-30 yard shots common for turkey kills.30 yard lead patterns in 20 gauge are very different from those at 40 yards and glaringly different from heavy payload 12 gauge shells.
More importantly it may help the people at Winchester to" GET IT " as to the need for a 20 gauge load based on the new Winchester Longbeard XR and to include #6 shot for 20 gauges.
Because just about every 20ga lead pattern sucks unless its under 30 yards.

Which is exactly why Winchester should see the need for their "improved lead" shell technology and why those not used to seeing what happens at 40 and think because it looks good at 30 it should still hold strong at 40.
And yes, I have seen some that shoot very tight center patterns even at 40 but not what you would really like to see as an overall pattern.
here are 2 old ones of mine

Not 2 bad.. I mean.. It dosen't s....
;D
Carlson and Federal FC 5 in 20 ga....fantastic combo
I have about 10 boxes of the older Federal trip-plus wad 6's i picked up from Rogers last year. I never did pattern them but this year I'll put some to paper and see what we get. I have no doubt they'll do better than any Win #5 load ever dreamed.
I been hunting with hevi shot for several years but i picked up some lead just to see what I can get I know it what be a good as hevi but i never patterned lead in my 20 ga ..pick up some Fed mag shok with fcw# 5 ,turkey thug and white lighting# 6 ....I dont think I will be switching all the way to lead but maybe when hunting in thick cover

I believe Winchester was just testing the waters this year by releasing the Long Beards in only 12 gauge, because they didn't know how popular they would be, and the 12 gauge is by far the most popular gauge for hunting turkeys. After this year I bet we will see them come out with the Long Beards in 20 gauge and 10 gauge as well, because they are such a big hit.

got my fingers crossed hoping that they see the light
I have been using my Franchi 20 with Hevi13's....highly effective
Yeah, I think we got it on the HTL and TSS , Atomic bomb, etc.
Looking for best of lead patterns in 20 gauge. Sort of kin to show us your best turkey teeth. :z-dizzy: ???
got out today and done a little shooting, didn't get to shoot the 7-1/2's through the 870 (don't ask)
but I had been wanting to try the Charles Daly and the full tube with some Federal FC shells.
I shot a Federal 3" 1-5/16oz #6 through it at 38yds and got 90 hits
will try to get pic up tomorrow
Here is mine Factory Full at 30 yrds ... FED HW 7's
Couldn't ask for better
Why did I even start this thread ? ??? :help: :z-dizzy:
HTL,TSS, Steel, etc. is not lead . You can't show a lead pattern by shooting something other than lead.
I am happy to report that I haven't seen a lead slug pattern yet but expect one any day now. ::)
This thread interests me a great deal. While I know Heavy's and the sort will produce, I can't justify the pricing of such loads.
Soooo hunting down the best lead combo I go.
Fiocchi 3" 1-1/4oz #7-1/2

SWEET there man. Looks like you have one of those golden combos and your chokes are smoking.
Glad you gave the Fiocchi 7.5s a try.
Man that turkey looks drunk! :TooFunny:
Good shootin with them Fiocchi. I'm gonna give them a try.

yes it is
I will try to post some 35 yard pics with the 2 3/4" #6 high brass win. and rem nitro mag 2 3/4" #4. Both got around mid 80's if I remember right. I read on Winchester's website that they are going to be making Rooster XR (Longbeard XR for pheasants, same stuff) in 2 3/4" for sure.

Let us know what gun and choke get what.
Lead is just not as effective as the others. You don't normally shoot that many shells
turkey hunting so why not buy the best. I like the MagBlends and don't consider them
expensive
"Lead is just not as effective as the others."
How much more effective than dead can lead be?Lead is as an effective of a turkey load now as it was when it was the only choice there was.Used inside 35-40 yards lead works as fine as anything, especially with the newer loads that have come out the last couple of years.
Average shots are well within lead kill ranges . Why not use titanium shot or only high end shotguns costing $1500 and more ? Just Because .This has been discussed too many times to even bring up.
Shoot what floats your boat but don't start condemning others if they don't smoke Camels, wear Muck boots, etc.
Line up 25 dead turkeys and hang em on a pole and see if you can tell which ones were killed with lead, HTL, TSS , etc.
These elitist statements are just that. I made some shots this afternoon with Federal lead pre FC at 25 and 30 yards with a 20 gauge and if HTL and TSS can kill one any better at that range I'd love to see it.
And I do have HTL and some TSS 20 ga loads but they are not the go to shells for most of my hunting.

Good shootin with them Fiocchi. I'm gonna give them a try.
I ordered some too. $15 for 25 shells is a lot more economical than $20+ dollars for 5 that you have to scramble to find anyway.
I am not enamored with the 40 yard thing anyway. If I can get a turkey to 30 or even 20 then I am doing my job and actually hunting.

sounds like a good hunting load
I think this lead section is the most interesting part of the old gobbler forum. I do shoot fed. Hw 7's in my 20 gauge but to tell you the truth I'd rather shoot lead. Even with the hw 7s, most of my turkeys are killed at 30 yards or less. I really like trying to find a choke and shell that will put 100 in that ten inch circle weather it be 35 or 40 yards. Iam looking to find a good shell and choke for number four lead in a twelve gauge. I believe they throw the most even patterns and you don't need a lot of shot in the ten, just a good even pattern. We all need more information on what shoots best in what. Iam sure that some here on OG could show us some unbelievable patterns with lead. Cluck
I wonder how much lenghtening the forcing cone and polishing on an 870 youth would help lead patterns.
1187 20ga., 26" barrel, Sumtoy 562-5 choke, Lazered 31yds., Hevi-Shot Triple Beards(lead)----135 in 10" circle.

I don't have a picture, but I got 117 heads in 10" at 35 yds with the Triple Beards out of my 870 w/ 26" barrel and Primos Jelly Head .570
That sounds like a good pattern, I may try some!
been thinking about trying some myself
The 20 guages have peaked my interest now that my kids are getting old enough to go sit in a ground blind. The lead patterns even seem more interesting especially with my children shooting at their first turkey. I would rather the turkey inside 25 yds and also some wiggle room in the pattern. Have been hunting with a Beretta 390 20 guage and HW 7's for a number of years and it is a killer at 40yds. Thats a long shot for an 6-8 year old. Just got a new 870 20 gauge turkey gun with a 21" bbl and Rem SF .572. I added the 1 inch spacer on the stock to shoot this summer and get the gun dialed in. Shooting double beads and getting all of the 20 guage loads together.

^^^ This is what got me started.
After all the post reading here on OG. Well...... you know the rest.
Shot this about a month ago. 30yrd 2-3/4" #9 Lead shot 7/8oz. 314 in 10 in circle. Still not happy with this so I have the gun out getting some more work done, my goal is to get 350 in 10 in circle. I don't care what is said about ballistic gelatin, this will kill a turkey all day, any day!
