I have just about completely quit using the vest in favor of a small pack. I use one call bag on my belt and a small pack for misc. I have set up brushed ground blinds with tank netting and tree lims all over nearly 900 acres with most positioned in spots I already know to be good. The vest just doen't seem as needed as it once was. reflexl
I'm going to try leaving the vest behind this year. I'm going to carry a small waist pack with a pot call, a scratcher and a few diaphragms. I'll carry my facemask and gloves there too. Going to try a gobbler lounger this year........
Can't do it completely. Either use the vest or a backpack.
I don't see it happening.
I like mine to much to leave behind, all my stuff is always in there ready to go. A nice seat attach if I need and a nice compartment to hind my turkey from sight in case of a lunatic hunter that doesn't see humans.

Same here. If I just hunted for an hour or two each morning like a lot folks, I'd never wear a vest. But with the amount of time I invest in a days hunt I always wear one. Just the water and food I carry justifies ones use.
Yep doing the switch myself. Waist pack with 2 pot calls, mouth calls. Gobbler lounger. Vest gets to hot down here in south Florida.
I started using my day pack for a couple of years but will go back to my vest this year. The advantage of my vest was all I used it for is turkey hunting and I always knew where everything was. I use my day pack for elk, deer, sheep and other big game animals and I was constantly switching calls around never getting use to which call was in which pocket.
I mainly turkey hunt down here in Dixie, so a lot of times during our seasons, vests are just too darned hot! I have a Primos Gobbler Vest, but don't wear it that often. Most of the time I wear my Beard Buster Belt.

I added a couple of extra pouches on it to carry all the stuff that I don't use most of the time. It is comfortable, doesn't heat me up or restrict my movement. About the only thing it doesn't do is carry my decoys.
It's a bit pricey these days, but back when I got mine it was a bargain!
I just use two fanny packs to carry all my gear.
Not gonna happen, my old vest is a close friend.
I hunt on small property and every bird I killed has been out of a ground blind, but I do use my vest to prowl around a bit, but the seat stinks, very little padding. I like a vest just to keep everything in place, but take it off while in the blind.
I prefer to use a small day pack, I have the badlands tree pack and it fits the purpose very nicely. I doubt I ever use the turkey vest again. :fud:
I got rid of mine and got special hunting satchel made gots more pockets then I really need. I just never like wearing a vest

I still love my elite vest but I would like to try one of these that RutnNStrutn uses.
God Bless

Never felt comfortable wearing a vest either, especially once the heat and humidity jump later in the season. If I'm hiking anywhere, its a fanny pack with shoulder straps. If I'm trolling logging roads and gas well roads on the mountain bike, then its just a trumpet call, long box and short box in a belt holster, a scratch box in the shirt pocket and a mouth call. Water bottle rides on the mountain bike, and padded seat goes around my waist or on the rear rack.
When they pry it from my cold, dead fingers. :z-twocents:
Va-Birdhunter, they are awesome if you add a couple of extra pouches to carry all your stuff. I still carry a backpack for my dekes, but it beats the heck out of having a hot, stuffed vest. I love my belt!! :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:
I have not used one yet, only been turkey hunting 3 years, don't feel the need for a vest yet. I carry a tube, wingbone call as my main calls, and one mouth call and occasionally a slate for backup. Cargo pockets are key. Don't forget room for the TP.
Tried to, but sometimes I cover so much ground and am away from the truck that I have to carry plenty of water and snacks. Especially in the heat of late season.
The rear pocket on my Tactical Tat'r is perfect for that.
Nope.Ive got a old 10x brand strap style I bought at wally world probably ten years ago.Got all my stuff packed in it by opening day and it usually stays in the truck-ready to go.As much as I tend to forget some things, its nice to be able to just grab and go with the vest.Ive got a Primos vest but dont care much for it,it does seem kinda constricting and hot at times.
All I use is a back pack! Can carry more but not as hot during the spring
Don't use a vest anymore although I'm thinking about going back to one! I hike into a lot of spots with a blind and have been putting a small pack in with the blind.
I have been using one for a few years now and can honestly say that I haven't killed any more birds by doing so but mostly I call for others so that could cause lower numbers. They are handy but you sure don't have to carry around a call for every pocket . In my hey day it was a box call and a mouth call only and they both fit in a pair of camouflaged coveralls or they didn't go. Back then I carried a dove stool loaded with netting, toilet paper, extra gloves/mask/,etc. The legs were filled with styrofoam.
In fact my right knee may force me to start "stooling" again . No more run and do anything . So, I am not anti vest but never found one that perfectly suited me but pretty close.
Not me . ol tom and me are best friends . :happy0167:
I pretty much ditched the vest years ago.
I use a small fanny pack to carry a boxcall, a slate, 2 strikers, a scuff pad, a pen, a zip tie and my license.
I strap a padded seat from one of my hang-on treestands around the pack belt and I'm good to go.
Only time I use the vest anymore is if I think I may have to carry a bird out a LOOOOONG way.
I just ordered a Ol' Tom Dura-Lite Vestless Mesh-Back Camo Shirt, at an attempt to see how hunting without a vest might be like. I got into Turkey hunting last year & got myself and both my kids outfitted with everything, including 3 nice vests. I'm a equipment junkie, so nothing more fun then getting new equipment to try out in the field. This shirt is just another thing to enjoy and use outside.
We'll see, might be that I have my brand new Super Elite 3 Vest up for sale before I get to use it!
I'd like to, just can't seem to shake it. I never did, always had a fanny pack, then I bought a rather large heavy vest from Cabela's. Too big, bulky and hot. I since went to a small lite vest from Primos, o.k. but I might go back to the fanny the older I get...hahahaha.
I haven't used one the last two years. A couple of mouth calls in my pocket and two trumpets around my neck and I'm good to go.
I haven't yet but thinking about trying the ol tom vestless shirt. I usually only carry 2 pot calls and 3 or 4 diagrams anyway. The only concern I have is what to use for a seat. Don't want to carry a chair or lounger so I was thinking maybe a thick treestand cushion.
I got an old Whitewater..I think the name is..about the last yr they offered the leafy and I use it for the camo. Took the seat off..rough it and sit on ground..take a plastic trash bag to sit on incase grounds wet. It also has zip off sleeves that come in handy. I just don't load it up..take very few calls, no decoys or blind.

NO WAY, the turkey vest is part of the hunt. Turkey gun, turkey shells, turkey calls, turkey decoys and thee good ole turkey seat, all with the vest except the gun. :icon_thumright:
I finally had to give up on the vest myself and go with a backpack and a portable seat cushion. It's just too hot here in Florida. I would love to be able to get rid of the backpack and go to a belt pack but I have too much junk to tote.
Just depends on my walk if I have long walk use belt back with few calls bottle water in side pocket of pants and go but do like all my junk for closer hunting
I've thought about using a fanny instead of vest..I mean I never use the game pouch anyways...just not sure id like the fanny being on my back for when I have to sit down really quick
Sometimes I wear a vest, sometimes I use a small fanny pack.
Depends on how I'm planning to hunt and where.
Well I went and found the ol tom duralite vestless shirt on clearance for 29.77 on bass pro's website. Had to order one of course. We will see if it replaces the ol tried and true vest

BINGO. I tried a belt one season. Did not work out on those long mornings where I had to sit with my back on a tree. Will be sticking with a vest.
Ive thought about it..but I don't function well at 4am. If I grab that vest and gun, I have what I need.
I use a mouth call mostly. For years I ran through the woods with it in my mouth and crow call around my neck, gun in hand.
Once the vest came along, Water bottle pocket, Baby wipes in a ziplock, shell holders (only 4 shells, no extra weight) bug spray for later season, quick access glove and face mask pockets, brown plastic Kroger bags for mushrooms and bloody turkey heads, and the seat.
Prob most of all, packing that bird out with a strip of orange behind ya, I'll keep wearing it......lol
Not me. My tactical tatr with all the adjustments becomes part of me. I am sure I would go crazy with some vests that are long and that do not have great adjustment but not this one.

Not a fan of a vest. To bulky and really no need for all the pockets. I use a shoulder bag made by Penns Woods. It has individual spots for different types of calls.
I just tried to find the link and they seem to have gone out of business. But i came across another nice one. Made by Brossie.

The only thing I will say is that my Penns woods has a light waist strap with a snap clip that keeps it from swinging when I need to run. Im sure I can add one to the brossie.
