Hi and hope all enjoyed a Merry Christmas. I have a new to me, and relatively unused 535 Mossberg (tactical stock) that I need to get set up for this upcoming season. I had some info from several threads on here about combinations of chokes and shot combinations that pattern well from last spring, but lost it when the computer took a dive! So, any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.
I have had 3 Mossberg 535s and currently have 1 of the "combo" models with the waterfowl and turkey barrels.
They are good guns, quite light and very versatile. I recommend 3" Hevi-13 shells with 2 oz. of either #6 or #7 shot.
I've tried a variety of turkey chokes with those guns and have found several that work well. The SSX has become my favorite with that gun and those shells, I prefer the #6 shot but I know others who really prefer the #7s. I don't shoot 3.5" shells through that gun due to the excessive recoil.
I hope that helps some.
Thanks,
Clark
Few chokes on the market that works. Now we put 660 to 665 in most ours. Have gone as small as 650 In a few of them.
Now shells the HV 13 in 6's and 7's. If want the lead load the new winchester shell is looking very good.
I had good luck with a .660 Primos Jelly Head, and Hevi-13 3-2-6's.
I am running a Pure Gold .670 right now in mine with Hevi 13 3.5" #7's and it has a nice even pattern out to 40 yards with plenty of pellets to spare. I have tried an Indian Creek .660 before and although it put up better numbers, I like the Pure Gold pattern better. I'm with Clark on the recoil. Last year, everybody was talking about the Turkey Thug 3.5" lead load shooting at 1300fps I think it was, and one shell was all I wanted to shoot out of the 535.

I have never shot a gun with such vicious recoil as a Mossy 535.
SSX with mag blends
