Title: Who Travels and Hunts by Themselves?
Post by: jb177 on March 10, 2011, 10:07:53 PM
I've always enjoyed traveling to neighbor states with a friend or my brother turkey hunting.  I prefer to hunt with somebody normally.  I've found as I've grown older, many of my hunting buddies have found other priorities in life.  Not sure what they are thinking, but...

Anyway, I still love to turkey hunt and contemplating making my first solo trip to OK this year.  How many of you guys prefer to travel and hunt alone?

Of course with gas prices stupid high, it'd be nice to have somebody to split that cost with...

I don't travel to other states really as I'm still young and money is more of an issue.  I do hunt a lot by myself and I will gladly do it to hunt.  I like to go with someone just to share the experience and for safety reasons too of course.  Can't hardly find a hunting partner that wants to hunt as much as I do.

95% of my turkey hunting is done solo. I don't travel to other states much, though. Living out in the woods like I do, I walk out of my back door in the morning and start hunting. Hard to find anybody around here as hardcore as I am about chasing turkeys though. Every great once in a while one of my coon hunting buddies will go with me, but not often. Would like to have a regular hunting partner, but I enjoy the solitude at times as well.

I am in the same boat this year. Always hunted with a buddy and my father but this year may be solo. And it is a long ride from La to NW Oklahoma (Arnett), 900 mile to be exact, my drive way to his.

Been down to Florida, Kansas and Wisconsin by myself on turkey hunts. Got some buddies that always go with to South Dakota turkey hunting. I also go for a 4 or 5 day pheasant hunt in SD. by myself each year. Looks like I will be going to Nebraska this year turkey hunting by myself. My friends just aren't as hardcore into turkey hunting as I am I guess.  I don't mind at all hunting by myself.

I generally hunt by myself. My circle of "hunting friends" seem really good at making plans, but pretty bad at following thru on them.

I like to hunt alone while I'm in the woods. I think you can concentrate on your strategy and tactics more. Plus 2 people is easier to bust than 1. I get to travel very little, but when I do I like to "go off" with a small group. It makes the trip alot more fun. When we get to the woods I'm solo if possible.

Thats the truth. Been more than one morning I've gotten to the woods late waiting on someone who slept through their alarm clock and never showed up, even after swearing up and down the night before they'd be there no matter what. I've gotten to the point now where I tell them the train pulls out thirty minutes before daylight. If you ain't there to catch the ride you can either go back to bed or wait on me to come back and get you after my early morning setup. Don't know of much that aggravates me worse than someone making me late to get to a hunting spot, then whines afterwards that I could have "waited ten more minutes". My reply is usually "well you could have gotten your a$$ up ten minutes earlier like you said you would.

I've had a couple quality solo trips in recent years. My dream trip was to go to SD to hunt Merriam's, so when I retired 2 years ago I went alone as all my hunting buddies were still working and couldn't do 2 weeks. Killed a beautiful gobbler in the Black Hills and another out in the prairie, on an Indian Reservation.  Also did a solo to SE Ohio and shot a mature tom. As was said earlier, with the price of gas, I don't think I'll do one this year by myself!

90% of my hunting is done alone I just prefer it I do like hunting with friends but most work in the am during the week and I have every am to hunt so thats more the reason I guess. I havent hunted another state in a long time because of money but used to hunt PA by myself often. There again I only live 30 min from the PA line so it isnt a long drive for me.

I always hunt alone and when I go out of state I go by myself. I like to go by my own schedule and come and go as I please.

All my turkey hunting is solo. My priorities don't always mesh with others so I go it alone and have been most of my adult life.  :icon_thumright:

I enjoy making trips with friends, and have done so many times in the past. However, I realized years ago that you can't always depend on someone else, so I just started making plans as if I was going solo. If one of my friends decided to tag along, all the better. If not, my plans were not compromised. Neill

My hunting buddy died unexpectedly some years back and I quit hunting prior to that. Now I enjoy turkey hunting and pheasant hunting, more so since I am semi retired now. Two close friends go with-me when they can but they both have families and still work full time so I hunt alone or with a guide (private land and he is required). I do like to set up on a turkey alone if my intent is to shoot but I will go with them or one of them to call the bird so they can shoot. If I kind of know the area hunting alone has never bothered me, I let some one know where I am headed and when I should be back or on the cell phone making new plans. I keep in touch with my wife so she does not worry. Good post.

Don't Travel but thru the week. I usually hunt by my self. On weekend I hunt with my brothers and nephew. So if anybody comes around my neck of woods. Try to work it out to go.

I hunt with friends mostly and spend a lot of my season guiding hunters. When I really want to kill a turkey, I go hunting alone. At least 90% of my turkeys have been killed when hunting alone. However,it can be fun going on a hunting trip and fishing trip alone.

I would love to try to keep up with you Doc.

My hearing is so bad I usually hunt with someone,  all my trips out of state are with folks or to meet some folks.

While I hunted deer and hog and dove, quail, etc. for many years Turkey I finally started getting interested in about 8 years ago.  I have traveled this road alone.  I have brought my daughters with me.  They have grown up doing it with me.  I love it and have traveled to my hunt camp in GA many times alone.  Most of the members up there don't Turkey hunt.  Self taught.  I huunt a little in Fla. then go to GA and try and enjoy it up there.  Love the Spring mornings.  Cold Clear, birds, spring green, some deer and the Turkey are icing on the cake.  Fair success but am not knocking them dead everywhere.  Enjoy learning as I go.   :anim_25: :fud: :newmascot: :z-paddy-smiley113:

This year I'm gonna try to get 2 buddies on birds. I prefer to hunt alone, but have made promises this year to friends that I have to keep. I have 2 weeks off, so I'll have plenty of time to hunt solo. If I have 2 people I really enjoy hunting birds with, it would be my son and FIL.
I hope to be able to put both my friends and my son on birds this year.

I do both, and enjoy both. Obviously hunting with  friends, and sharing the experience is cool. However, hunting by oneself is trully your OWN hunt, and success and failure depends on your own merits. I really like that challenge.

I like hunting with other people. I love to share the experience with friends and family and especially those who have never been turkey hunting or have never killed a turkey. When I go alone it's all business and the turkeys are in trouble.

I try to go every morning I can with my grandfather, but he is laid back and generally follows my lead. He will also be the first to say "I ain't going there on that gobbler" so he goes to one and I go to another. We work good together and have been the death of dozens of gobblers over the years.

BUT, other than him, I am a one man show cause I just hunt different than my friends. Occasionally my wife will go, but I know before I ever pull out of the drive I will be back by 8:30 cause she ain't gonna sit any longer.

The majority of the time heading to my lease in Kentucky, I have my Lease Partner with me. I have several times though, and including last Spring just headed down myself and hunted solo.

Ilove to travel to different places to hunt and usually go it alone.I used to invite "buddies" along but somehow never got asked to go on any of their hunts so now its just me and the road, unless its youth day.

Either way is fine by me.  The people who hunt with me or visa-versa have the same drive that I do.  So we each know were in it for the long haul whe hunting with the other.   And people know not to be late at my house.   One or two have learned that "were leaving at 4:30 means I'm leaving at 4:30" period!

Got a 8 hour drive to my destination, not looking forward to that drive by myself.  It'd be nice to have somebody to split the driving time.

We always go on my rig so I can call the shots.

I go about 100 miles South and East of our house to Hunt in MN.  I had some friends that used to apply with me but they slowly quit.  One friend applies buy his house now.
I take the camping trailer and the wife and I stay down there for the 5 day season.
I also hunt in WI and that is always by my self. (unless I am getting videoed).
I hunt grouse. ducks, phesant by myself mostly once in a while friend or brother comes and hunts with me. (the dog comes along except for turkey).
I enjoy both ways.

I don't mind hunting by myself around the house, but prefer to have a companion when traveling for safety reasons.  Nonetheless, I'm going to OK by myself this year I guess.  I've got access to ~500 acres of private land and I can't pass that up.

I hunt MN and WI by myself.  I sneak hunt a lot, which doesn't work well with two.  I'm in sales management so I deal with employees and customers all day every day.  And, I love my family to death, but having young kids means nonstop activity.  Between work and home going hunting by myself is the one thing that keeps me sane!

I hunt with friends 75 % of the time.  I have times where I will go by myself, but it just isn't any fair for the turkeys if I do that!  I like to call in kills so....I really prefer to buddy hunt.
