Title: Box call suggestion
Post by: jbennett on November 02, 2013, 10:38:18 PM
I'm looking for some info guys. I have replaced every call that I have with custom calls made by turkey hunters for turkey hunters except for my box call. I hope you guys can answer a few questions for me. I want to know your favorite wood combos and suggestions on a call maker that want cause me to have to take out a loan to put one in my vest. Thanks for the help!

I like the snakewood over teak hen boxes from Richard Hudson (Strutnrut), walnut over cedar from Albert Paul, purpleheart over mesquite from Noel Gonzales, maple over walnut from SS, and walnut over mahogany. M.L. Lynch didn't make hundreds of thousands of them for no reason.

Depends on what your looking for. Albert Paul, Jeff McKamey, SS, Marlin Watkins and a slew of other guys make some good sounding box calls. I usually always post a sound file with each one of my calls. That way people can hear what it sounds like. Most call makers will work with you and make a call you want. They will usually play a call over the phone until you get the sound you want. Some of the call makers do have a waiting list so if your looking for a call for this spring you might want to get on it in a hurry. Good luck,

What for a box are you looking for? Long? Short? That will help refining your search.

I just recently bought my first box call from Frank Kruer III after purchasing a great sounding copper call from him last year. It is a Yellowheart over Mahogany shortbox and it sounds great and it top notch craftsmanship. It would be hard to beat for what he charges. There are a lot of great callmakers out there that make reasonable priced boxes that will flat call them in.

Mr Paul and Mr Richard Hudson box are hard to beat and for wood you can't go wrong with walnut but a lot has to do with what kind of sound your looking for

Thanks for the kind word . Mark and Jay I have a few Turpin Hen boxes already built. If you like to hear one let me know. There are many other great call makers all who will be willing to help you.

In my post, I referred to snakewood over teak but in all actuality, it doesn't matter the wood combo. All I've ever heard from any of Richard's boxes is "turkey"; and, I've heard quite a few of them.

all the guys mentioned are great box call makers,  if you ever get to Georgia,  Lonnie Mabry makes one heck of a box at a great price,  also Jerry Zebros boxes are amazing in my opnion at a great price.  Jerry took a break last year,  I don't know if he is making boxes again.  Scoot
