Title: Camera, tape measure, scale
Post by: Jay on February 08, 2011, 07:58:07 AM
If you haven't scored your bird before, make sure you know how it is suppose to be done prior to going out in the field. I believe we only have a couple on the Raiders, who haven't been on a team before, so this should not be a issue. Scoring the hooks is an outside measurement, not inside the hooks. My personal issue is scoring the dang beard by myself. One hand holding the beard to the base, and one hand holding the longest hair by the tape measure, leaves it a hand short to take the picture. After about 10 shots screwing with it, I finally get a passable photo. Then I cut it off, lay it on the bumper of my truck on a tape measure, snap another shot to verify my measurement. Remember to measure the longest hair. Weight is easy. Hang it on a scale, and snap. My digital fish scale works excellent for this. Only thing you have to watch is glare on the face of the scale can make it hard to read. Make sure you can read it on your photo. EVERY year I've done this contest, someone doesn't get a bird scored in the contest for some reason. NOT THIS YEAR. This is a team event, YOU commited to, and I expect you to honor that commitment. However, not getting a Turkey, after you gave it all you could, is part of hunting. It could happen to anyone, including myself. We need 10/14 to score, which with this team shouldn't be an issue. More birds we put down better chance of culling for a higher team score. If you shoot a Jake, score it. You never know if the score will be needed. A couple of years ago a Jake bumped us into second. Any questions on this feel free to ask.

To help you as I see Jay using a seamstriss measuring tape and to free up on hand easily

Get yourself a tape mesure that once you pull it out it stays put. They are cheap and do get the widest one you can.

Using a rigid metal tape like the photo let's you have one hand free to take photos.

Here you can see how it stays put!

Jay, you better make sure your guys know which end of the tape measure to use, and that the lens side of the camera goes towards the turkey. Also, most importantly, that they leave all those bathroom scales at home. We don't want a repeat of last year........

JW, the tape measure is definitely the way to go when you are by yourself. The beard measurement always seems to frustrate me a bit, before I get an accurate measurement. I always measure first without a camera, so I know exactly what the length is, then try to get a decent pic showing that.

Thanks Jay - and yes when you are measuring 5 to 6 turkeys each yr you learn to be effficient as I am by myself.

A simple tripod has been added to the truck to get a pciture of me with bird if needed.
