Title: Hen still on nest?
Post by: cluck on July 20, 2013, 07:27:14 PM
Me and grandson took a bike ride yesterday and saw something I've never seen this late in summer. We spooked a hen out of the fence row beside the roadside. She acted like she might have a nest so we went back and sure enough there it was. Maybe four feet off the blacktop. It might contain maybe eight or ten eggs. I've always thought they should be done laying and hatched by this time of the year. Whats the late's anybodys seen hen's still on the nest? We live in missouri.    Thanks,   cluck

With all the rain we have had here in the south I haven't seen many poults ,Just lone hens. I hope some are setting now.

In my area (north Florida) we have had the wettest summer in the last 30+ years.  I have never seen so much water and flooding But it was wet during nesting as well... so the hens must of started out nesting in higher ground.  The issue is when the big rains come right after they nest.  Anyway.. I did see a few hens with about 10 little ones yesterday. They are growing up fast.. almost half the size of the momma hens.

I ran up on them while driving my polaris around.  they scattered, I shut it off, hid in the woods and did a little soft call... they all came back within 15 feet of me... it's was pretty cool.

That's awesome. I haven't seen any birds all summer, we've had some flooding along rivers and creeks in some places I hunt. But the crops are getting fairly tall so I don't usually see many around here.

Dang, this is late for her to have eggs.  I have seen small poults in July before.  If she hatches them I hope they grow enough to make it through the winter.

I'am thinking she finaly gave up. I went back four or five days later and never saw her again. There were no egg shells so maybe a critter got'em. She nested just maybe four feet off the road. One person told me they saw a hen with four or five poults in their yard. We need some good hatchs here in missouri.   cluck

Last week I saw 2 hens and there were 5 softball size poults with them.  Hope they can eat a ton of bugs the next couple of months.
