Title: Hanging by the pool
Post by: TrackeySauresRex on July 17, 2013, 09:34:27 PM
I'm guessing I have the pool to myself the rest of the summer. The wife fliped out when she saw the close up.

It's the first one I ever saw.

Killed one on my pool a couple years ago.  First one I'd ever seen too.  Wonder if it's the water?

Here in the southwest, black widows are very common.  Fortunately, they are also very reclusive and we rarely see them,..unless we go looking for them, then they are usually easy to find.  Their webs are very distinctive, so it's easy to know where they are.  Seems like we used to have a lot more of them around.  In the last few years, I see them less and less often.

As many of them as we have, hardly anyone ever gets bitten by them,...or at least we never hear about it.  They are ominous-looking little devils, but the fear people have of them is over-stated.  We get along fine with them and they catch a lot of bugs.

They like the firewood stack around my house.  They DON'T like an aerosol can and a lighter.

We see them all the time here in GA in telephone pedestals. They love cement blocks too.
