We used to lose power often.  Last winter we had a Generlink installed on our meter.  It allows me to safely attach a generator at the meter.  My generator is a Generac 5000 that surges to 8000.  The electrican said that we can run our house on it if we have no 220 devices on.  I don't know if I could run a water heater or clothes dryer if all other things are off.  But it beats setting in the dark with no tv, etc.  No power loss of course since installation.
