Title: Baseball Bat Turpin Caller
Post by: shadetree callers on June 09, 2013, 07:08:46 PM
Here's a Turpin caller I made out of an antique baseball bat given to me by my neighbor , Miss annie Hull age 79. She brought the bat to me along with another that she and her siblings would knock rocks around with and asked if I could make a turkey caller with them  . She got the bat around 1940, and played with it on the farm she was raised on near Dayton, Ohio. I added some scraps to round it out and she came out nice . The lid is redheart and the base is made of old barn chestnut and some ipe recovered from the coney island pier. She has that classic Turpin "bark" , yelps easy with nice clucks and purrs . Even has a little gobble in her . Thanks for looking !
Bob

Well I'll be darn, a fine looking call it is and for me I was fortunate to hear this call today and to my ears it sounds as good as it looks.  I like the notion that us callmakers, frugal that we are, have the foresight and skills to turn and old, but not fully used up clunk of wood into a fine instrument like a turkey call.  That also must be one of the nicest hunks of ash I have ever seen. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:
