I'm wanting to put it on a 870 with 23" bbl. I want to keep the barrel as short as possible.

I am guessing 1.5". I can give you a definite answer in the morning though because I have a 23" 870 with a JH.

Ok. My guess was on the money--1.5". Your barrel will stick out a little more than 10.5 from you magazine tube cap so you are talking about a little more than 12" with the choke added.

This was my first season using my 870 and I had no problems running and gunning timber (as much as 10 miles a day) if you are wondering about maneuverability.
