Can you take a 2 3/4" 870 receiver and make it a 3" receiver ?
I'm no expert here, but I've never heard of that. You would have to have it re-chambered and the ejection slot lengthened (at least). In theory, I guess it could be done.
I've taken rem 870 wingmasters that have 2 3/4" barrels and put a 3" barrel and had no problems. I've also had a gunsmith take a 2 3/4 barrel and bore it out to shoot 3" shells. No problems. May be a different situation with express guns. Minor filing on one part on the inside of the reciever to change from 2 3/4 to 3".
From what I understand you can take a 2.75" 870 and throw on a 3" chambered barrel and be perfectly safe, however the 3" hull will get hung up and not want to eject. Something about the non magnum receiver will try to eject the shell before the longer hull has cleared the chamber. With 2.75" hulls it ejects just fine. Read that in Shotgun Sports I believe.
Apparently yes...

Recently bought a wingmaster that had a 2 3/4 barrel on it with fixed choke. Put a 3" barrel on it with interchangeable chokes. Gunsmith did some minor filing on one part on the inside. Shoots fine. Easy fix.
So all one has too do is open up the ejector port . I have put a 3" barrel on a 2 3/4" receiver without any problems.but when you fire a 3" in it the hull gets stuck. So if ou opened te port up it should work, but I really don't know that why I asked. Thanks to all.
A good gunsmith can turn a 2.75" chamber to a 3" chamber.
