shot my personal best tom to end my season last week.
i knew birds were roosted on the ridge i was headed to way before sunrise, but it about knocked me off my turkey seat when a tom broke the pre-dawn silence with a thunderous gobble in a treetop just 30 yards away.
fortunately i was set up early enough and the foliage was thick enough that he didnt see me.
he proceeded to gobble about 100 times before gliding down onto an old road about 60 yards away. a soft yelp on a diaphragm spun him around, and he gobbled and started struttin up the hill. i lost sight of him in the brush, so i yelped again, he gobbled closer and then i could see his white head and fan through the briars easing up the roadway.
i didnt have a clear shot until he was 15 yards away.
he ended up being my best-ever tom - 25.5 pounds, 1.75 spurs and 11.25 beard.

Illini Tom, you better not forget where you tagged that one because he spread those genes around for sure. You have a good chance of doing it again if you are in that kind of gene pool.
wow that is a great bird!! congrats

not much chance of that happenin :funnyturkey:
i have shot a lot of nice toms on that ridge over the years
this guy was definitely spreading his genes. his breast plate was bare of feathers.
his weight surprised me. usually big toms that late in the season will weigh in the low 20s. heck, if i had run into him a few weeks sooner he might have been pushin 30 pounds.
and thanks for all the congrats, guys :gobble:
O my that is awesome!!!
very nice, congrats
