Title: Regular high brass loads
Post by: EDP1 on May 14, 2013, 08:56:25 PM
Does anyone still hunt with the high brass #6, 7.5 loads. How far would you shoot with them?

I use "High Brass" loads in my Model 12 with 30" Full barrel. I shoot both 1.25 ounce heavy field loads and 1.5 ounce mags. With 6's or 7.5's I will pull the trigger at 35 with that gun.

lots of times
I use low brass 1-1/8oz and HB 1-1/4 oz loads when I know that I will be hunting in the "swamp"
shots are pretty well short here, especially when it greens up

I shoot a similar handload from the open barrel of my O/U (1.25 oz buffered 7.5s). I use a fairly open choke in that barrel for close in birds and limit my shots to 30 yds. The shell will certainly kill to 35 yds with a tighter choke, but 7.5s hit my min penetration level at 35 yds. High brass 6s are only range limited by their pattern density. As far as they will put 100 pellets in a 10" circle, they will reliably kill turkeys. Just shoot some out of your rig and see how they do.
