Well another one took a dirt nap this morning. I took my cousin out this morning to some private land and knew where a bird was from the day before. We slipped down the trail and I hooted and the bird gobbled no more than 80 yards away. I put out a single hen decoy right in he middle of the road and we slipped back about 15 yards. After a few minutes of waiting he gobbled again followed by another one that was deeper in the woods. As it got lighter I clucked a few times on the trumpet and he gobbled back. TIME TO GET QUIET!!!! After about 10 minutes we watched the bird pitch out ofthe tree and land about 65 yards in front of us and immediately go into strut. The bird steadily made his way towards us but soon started angling towards our left. I soon lost sight of him because of he side of the tree I was on but my cousin being left handed got to watch the whole show, I could hear him spitting and drumming and soon my cousin told me he was in range. I heard the sound of the safety come off and next thing i know KAABOOM. As I wheeled around the tree I see the bird on the ground. My cousin had just killed his first longbeard, and we were done at 6:12. To say my cousin was excited would be an understatement!!!
Best thing is we still have a week to go and there were 5-6 other birds gobbling this morning.
10 1/12 inch beard, 1 1/8 sharp hooked spurs.
