Title: Some awesome Turkey pics
Post by: longbeard11 on May 08, 2013, 09:20:56 AM
Pulled my camera card in one of my cameras Saturday after our great hunt.  This camera is on a big oak flat just down a big point from where turkeys have been roosting consistently.  This place is absolutely torn up with scratching and knew I was going to have some good pics of turkeys and a few strutters.  We actually heard 6-8 different gobblers along with some jakes roosted in this bowl around where my camera is.  These are some of my favorite pics I have ever got, especially the first one and the last one.  First one is just beautiful, two big ol gobblers with thick beards gonna fight it out.  The Last is my good buddy Nathan standing proud with his turkey's feet sticking out of the back of his vest after our hunt on Saturday, cool pic! Hope you guys enjoy.

Yeah, they tend to scratch where you throw corn out.

That area is a known feeding a stutting area anyways, that is why I chose that area for my camera in the first place.  I get pics there daily of turkeys when there is nothing out.  Its a huge oak and beech flat right below a roosting area and right above a huge field, they travel through that area all day long on and off.  When I went in there a month before turkey season there was more scratching in there than I had ever seen.  I put the camera up and threw some cracked corn out just so I could get some good pics in there.  That is the only time this year I put any corn in that area, just did it to take a survey of what I had on my farm, turned out getting a good feel for what I had and got some great pics as a result.  Glad you guys liked them.

What exactly is wrong with spreading corn in the offseason to get good pics? Not quite understanding the point here?

Absolutely nothing!! As long as you follow state rules, it is fine in my opinion. Whether its that, your hunting style, or shooting a jake, whatever, I say, if its legal and ethical, and it makes you happy, then go for it! Others might not do the same, but if you're within the law, and happy, have at it. That's my opinion!

totally agree.  We feed on one of our big farms heavy up until about 2 weeks before the season and then we remove it.  In these particular pics I had taken corn in and put it out in that area 10 days before our season started, which is our law, it has to be gone 10 days before you hunt it.  In my case I couldnt hunt that are until the weekend so it had been 15 days before I hunted it.  I do not hunt over it, but I definitely supplimental feed along with food plot on my farms.  I put the corn out simply to get get pics of strutters in the area and thats the only reason.  It worked, Im very happy with it.

There is corn on the ground in the picture on 4-17 and on 4-18 . And you are standing in the pic with a gun on 4-18.... Something seems wrong there :OGturkeyhead:

Nice pics, I would love the opportunity to hunt over corn but MDC says I cant and it is not worth the fine. Can't see a problem putting corn out for some pics.

No difference in hunting a corn field.Just a ideal grass seed etc and bird seed is harder to see in pics.

Although WV law says no hunting turkey over bait. What I call hunting over bait and you call hunting over bait may be two different things.

For all we know the OP killed this bird 50-100 yards from this corn..That is not hunting over bait.

Hunting 50 yards from a bait pile IS hunting over bait. If I had to throw corn out to kill a turkey I'd quit huntin. But hey if that's what u gotta do go for it. Prolly wouldn't brag about it though cuz what have you really accomplished?

I put corn out at that farm on 4/12, the turkey pics are dated 4/17, 4/18.  Our season started here on 4/22 and I wasnt able to hunt that farm until the weekend of 4/27 so that corn was long gone by the time I made it up there to hunt and well withing the regulations of our state.  The pic of my buddy carrying his turkey was this past weekend 5/4, so it was long after, and that turkey we killed was a mile and a half from where that camera is, we just stopped there on the way back to the truck to pull that camera card.  I would never hunt over corn, that farm is loaded with turkeys, there is no need to.  Im pure run and gun and that farm is my honey hole, has produced at least one turkey for me or a buddy for the last 8 years and the population is growing.
Corn is good to put out for pics and that is the only reason I do it.  Some people see it different than others and some people are just jealous, i guess thats what it boils down to.  I just thought they were awesome pics and wanted to share. Glad you guys enjoyed them :) Have a good rest of the season, a week left here in WV

That guy in the last pic was my buddy, I took him out that day and called that turkey in for him, it was his first turkey!! Thats one proud hunter standing there.  That turkey he is toting was killed a mile from this camera and isnt any of the turkeys in the pictures, we just stopped by on the way back to the truck to check that camera before we left for the day.  That is one proud hunter standing there haha.   If you saw my other thread "A hunt I will never forget" That is him in those pics, I am the one with the beard.  That was an amazing day for sure, the Lord truly blessed us, cant wait to get the footage together to share.
