Title: Old School 835
Post by: Punisher on April 28, 2013, 12:29:08 PM
I found one yesterday in a gun shop for $175 in, I would say, good shape. It is non-ported in the original Realtree camo.  I was just wondering if that is a descent price and how well they pattern compared to the 835s today.  Thanks in advance.

I would say they will pattern right with any 835 of today.  My 835 I found out for sure was made in 2000.  I had a couple of buddies that had older ones than mine.  And I would say they would shoot with mine on most loads with the exact same choke in each barrel.  Granted you can always fine one particular barrel from the same model gun that will out perform the others by a little bit.  But the same can be said for choke tubes.  I have seen this with my own eyes.  But for the most part all if made to specs like they should be will shoot typically about the same.  Those older 835 barrels were still .775 bores just like the ones made today.  Forget about the ports on the barrel.  That don't mean better patterns.  The ports were added later on to 835 barrels to relieve gas pressure somewhat and reduce recoil.  That 's all they were for.  And I can't say for sure how much they gave actually reducing recoil.  But if they do work somewhat, I doubt you would notice the difference.

Just like mine and for $175 I would own 2 of them.

I agree.  Anytime you can get an 835 in pretty good condition for $175 it would be hard to pass one up.  Heck you could always sell it later on and make some money if need be.  They aren't getting any cheaper for new ones.
