Title: How do you guys store your mouth calls?
Post by: racksnspurs on April 23, 2013, 12:13:08 AM
I was just curious how everyone stores their mouth calls.  I had one guy tell me he puts his in an old skoal can with a little mouth wash and keeps them in the fridge.  I thought the alcohol would hurt the latex after a while.  Any input would be appreciated.

When I am done for the day, I soak them in mouthwash for about 30 seconds. Then I rinse them off well with cold water. I pat them dry and put them in a plastic skoal can that has holes drilled in its lid. This can stays in my refrigerator year around. Hope this helps.

50/50 Mouthwash and water, use the mouthwash that is alcohol and dye free it wont hurt anything. Store in a container in the fridge. In the field I carry a skoll can with a sponge in it, soak the sponge in mouthwash keeps them freshing in the field and the reed from sticking together

I wash mine with soap and water use a primos reed separator pat with a paper towel and let it air dry. When it's dry I sprinkle some talcum powered between the reeds and for long storage I keep them in an old snuff can in the fridge. I've had a few for going on three years now.

I separate the reeds with a toothpick and soak in a 50/50 mixture of Listerine (blue) and water. Rinse with cold water and air dry. Then store in the frig. When you use them again they don't have a fowl taste and may be germ free. Not sure about that though.

In season, I rinse them with water and keep them in the case they came in. I put a folded up napkin in the case with a call on both sides. I do the same thing off season, except I keep them in the fridge. New calls stay in the fridge. I get two seasons out of a call this way.

I found that mouthwash solutions caused tape adhesive to break down prematurely.

After each hunt - run water between the reeds, shake dry and put em in the freezer.

After season - with reeds separated soak em in alcohol free mouth wash (I use Crest Pro-Health) for 10 mins or so, rinse between reeds with cool water, shake dry and put em in the freezer til next year.

You'll get a few seasons out of this way.

Gotta use the alcohol free dye free stuff and it won't break down the tape adhesive.

I wash them in alchahol free mouthwash. I let them fully dry and then I keep them in one of those clear plano boxes. I do this so I can label the back of each compartment so I remember wich ones are getting ratty. I have had some last me years. I do always keep a few brand new ones of my favorites around. Just in case.
