Title: What to do.
Post by: wingbonehntr on April 09, 2013, 09:22:52 PM
Just asking for your opinions. My 13 yr old son killed his biggest gobbler ever yesterday. Had 1-3/8 &1-7/16 spurs. Those are few and far between here in south Louisiana. I wanted to mount it for him but he flopped in a big mud hole and destroyed a bunch of feathers. The taxidermist said we could find another cape but my boy says that it wouldn't be his turkey anymore if we did so. What do you guys think about using a different cape?  Thanks ,Brent

The taxi should be able to just replace a few feathers.

Sounds like your boy already knows what he wants to do. Save the beard, spurs and fan if possible and make a display of them.

It is odd that you can't wash that bird off. I know I hear that sort of thing on here all the time, but it still is odd that those features can't be rinsed off with some water. BUmmer. Feeling bad for your boy BUT feeling jealous he killed a killer big turkey too! If I'm your kid, I want that bird, mud and all. I understand his point.

The taxi is a good friend of mine, there was a large patch of feathers missing on his back and several broken tail feathers. He said the mud wasn't a big deal, it was the broken and missing feathers.

make him a set of wingbone calls from the wings, have date and time put on a plack. I have made a bunch for kids that killed there first turkey, I dont charge if it was there first turkey, Just save me a few wing from other birds. It is something he could use in the field to take another bird. and not collect dust.

Congrats to your son on a great bird. As for the mount leave it to him. He is 13 he will beat it.
