Title: How many have lost a spot because...
Post by: honker22 on March 07, 2011, 01:10:36 PM
How many of ya'll have lost a good turkey hunting spot because, out of "kindness", you took the landowner along with you on a hunt?  I have lost my best few spots around home because of this.  At the end of the day- I reflect and say "Well I had a good run and I enjoyed it while I could."

The other side makes me a little hesitant to do this in the future.  I can't blame the guy, it's his land, and he can do whatever he wishes and he didn't have to let me hunt it in the 1st place.  Almost everyone I've guided has gotten hooked and it's good for the sport, but I am a little selfish when it comes to turkeys.

Just wondering if any of you had experience like this.

Not yet. Most of my places belong to old farmers that hate the old "seed buzzards"!

Got one worse than that.  I lost TWO spots because we took a farmer's grandson hunting.  We were even leasing the spot, and the next year we were told that family only was going to hunt it.  After he hunted the snot out of that spot, he went to his Aunt and got family permission to hunt another farm we had, so we lost that one too.

I got kicked off a lease because the owners buddy needed somewhere to hunt. He gave us 30 days to get all of our shooting boxes and stands off the propery.

I had the opposite happen. I took a farmer and his wife out last year and they got their first turkeys. Now I have access to all his land, his families land, and some friends of his.

Congrats,  a nice positive response.  That isn't the way it happens in Louisiana.

Not for turkeys but I lost two bowhunting spots.  The land owner said go ahead and hunt it, no one has ever shot a deer here with a bow.  I hunted it for 3 years and shot 3 bucks off it.  One was a nice 8.  After he saw the deer, he decided he was going to hunt it.  I also had a spot a guy in the Twin Cities owned and never hunted.  I shot a nice buck and in thanks sent him a card and told him the meat was helpful for a college student.  The next year I called and he said he was going to lease the land for $1,000 and that some guy from the Cities was going to hunt it.  If I would have never sent the card, I could still be hunting it.

Sometimes it's best to be very friendly and helpful to the landowners, but not let them know what you get on their property unless they ask.

I have for sure--and this ties back to the thread we had a while back about turkey hunters telling the truth. I used to have a great turkey hunting honey hole. The land owner did not turkey hunt so I had full run of the place. Since he was not a turkey hunter, I thought he would be excited to hear about all my gobbler encounters and hear about and see pics of the gobblers I killed.  I was wrong. In hind sight, I think he became jealous of all the fun I was having--now, I can't hunt it at all unless he decides to come along as well.

Now I have another great place on private ground--but guess what-- I almost never see or kill any turkeys there ( nod nod/wink wink).

I learned my lesson--loose lips sink ships.

Never thought of it that way. If I ever get lucky enough to be granted permission like that in the future, I'll be sure to keep my big mouth shut!! Thanks for the heads up!!

Yup, had numerous land owners tell me to shoot as many as I can.  One said he will pull the hay wagon up and for me to fill it right up with turkeys.

Like all great spots it is bound to end sometime.  Most of the time around me it is family members that decide to give it a go and then you are told it is too crowded or so and so will be hunting it from now on.  Never have I taken a land owner and gone that route.  Just have to enjoy it while you got it cause you never know when it will be over.

I got one that nobody can beat.  A couple years ago I lucked out on some primo hunting ground that belonged to an old man. He said I could hunt all I wanted and that no one else hunted on this property.  I did for about a month and killed a nice 10 pt. when the rut started. One afternoon I found him waiting by my truck wanting to know who I was and what I was doing on his land. I thought he was joking, but soon realized he was serious. I tried explaining how he had given me permission to hunt, but he wasn't buying it. A few days later I talked with his wife and told her I was sorry for misinterpreting what the old man said about me hunting the property. She just stood there, shook her head, and said, that man don't know what he says or does from one day to the next. His Alzheimer's is getting worse every day.

Just an example of why one needs the permission to hunt the land written down, dated, and signed, other than it being the law here as well.

God Bless,
David B.

Guys don't feel bad just look at it like this You can kill birds in a spot with your talents but they might not be able to even see a bird cause they don't know what there doing, so they get skunked.

I just thought of one more but this time trapping.  In WI it can take two years to get a fisher tag so I talked to the land owner for three years about trapping and he would ask all the time if I got a tag.  I would say no and he would say go a head and trap any way.  I would never do that so I waited and got a tag.  One morning after checking traps and finding a fisher in a trap, I pulled my gear and walked to the truck.  As I was walking out I hear a truck door slam and a bolt close on a rifle.  I said hi really loud and said my name very clear.  Well here comes the land owner with rifle in hand and handgun on side saying what the H... are you doing on my land and what are you doing with that fisher!!!  I said that I had permission and that he wanted them trapped because they kill the squirrels.  Well he turned on me and said the fishers in his woods were safe and don't need to be trapped because they get along with the squirrels.  I said I was sorry and have not talked to him since.  For 3 years all I was told was to kill them no matter what then when I trap one, they guy almost shoots me.  By the way, he was the same owner from the deer story and my neighbor growing up.  I think old age caught up to him sooner than expected.
