Title: Do I need additional different sounds & custom calls?
Post by: kevin2 on April 03, 2013, 03:22:52 PM
I'm heading into my first Turkey season. I started out by learning how to use a diaphragm call over the last 3 years. Once I got that down, I decided this year I was actually going to try to hunt.

Now, I've gotten a few other calls. I was thinking about adding 1-2 other custom calls from our board here. I'll list what I have, and maybe you can suggest what might be different sounding & would likely help me out hunting...

1. Diaphrapm calls-5
    2 Gooserbats-one custom Heckler & 1 Standard Heckler
1 MFK don't know the model
2 custom diaphragms I learned on & I have no idea who I got them from!

2. Long Box by Spring Creek Turkey Calls
got the BLOODWOOD over BLACK WALNUT LONG BOX

3. Lonnie Sneed Hot Hen Slate

4.  2 Fred Cox strikers-Tulipwood & a Purpleheart

That is my chest of tricks as it stands now. I was thinking of ordering a small box by Spring Creek, maybe a glass call by someone here on the classifieds. Not sure if I have enough calls OR if I'm going over board either!

I like your idea of a glass call.

OK thanks. Tell me, is there any particular custom caller that I might look at that isn't to awfully expensive? Seems like there are different types of glass calls too. Is there any glass call that is better than another?

You're off to a great start, the calls you've chosen are a great bang for their buck.  A glass call would be a good choice or a metal call (either aluminum or copper), they'll give you very different sounds than your slate.  Lonnie Sneed's green glass is a great glass call and you won't find one for a better price.  Kimmy Hanks and Pat Strawser also make a darn good glass call.

I don't think you need anything else, just work on being proficient in the field with what you already have.

If you want another call, wait til you have the money to get the right one. Hooks bronzed glass, Halloran Twisted Sister/Crystal Mistress, Hanks Glass, or houndstooth bronzed glass. Halloran's will cost $65 but I dont think anyone ever regrets buying one.

Nate's right... In my opinion, you don't NEED another call... If you want one, like I said, glass or metal would be the way I'd go.  I agree with all the guys Nate mentioned for glass calls, I have the Crystal Mistress and Twisted Sister, they're both great calls. You mentioned a Spring Creek short box, they're good sounding calls, no doubt, but I'd spend a few more $ and get an SS field grade...

You got plenty of calls and some good ones I build calls and never take all that in the woods I opt for being mobile and comfortable but you have a great arsenal hit the woods and enjoy! Good luck in tha woods!!

I'd recommend Gary Taylor of Stone Road Turkey calls.  Great calls, fair price.

If I was in your shoes all over again, I would hunt with what you already have, learn to be proficient with them, and spend as much time as possible in the woods learning what turkeys like to do in the spring.
It is better to be proficient with one call than so-so with two-

You've got a pretty good arsenel right there.  If oyu want to look at a Glass or Aluminum I would Check with Gary at Magnolia Game Calls.  His calls are top shelf and won't break the bank.

Don't discount Box calls when thinking of calls to hunt. Somedays Tom has an ear for wood.
