Hi, I am coming to Cofield, NC to hunt turkeys in mid April. Just wondering what the turkey population looks like this year? Any advice for hunting in NC verses PA.
Thanks...
I have not hunted Hertford Co. so I can't say specifically what the pop. is doing this year, but in general the pop. is still expanding in that part of NC. I hunt a little farther west in Halifax Co. and we seem to have had a fairly good hatch based on what we saw during deer season.
If you'll be down in mid April expect the leaves to be fully or almost fully out by that time in that part of NC. You'll be in the coastal plain so you can expect the terrain to be pretty flat and be prepared to possibly hunt in some swampy conditions. Also, be prepared for plenty of ticks and skeeters. Good luck.

Don't forget the water mocassins.
Oh my....that isn't good. I can deal with the little things but I don't like snakes.
Before you pack your gun and shells, You better pack your snake boots and thermacell. I hunt in Northampton County just west of where your going lots of birds on our farms, LOTS OF SNAKES EVERYWHERE....You should have a good time, PM me when your down, if I'm at the farm maybe we can eat lunch.

Will do. Not sure of my schedule. I am hunting with an outfitter. Evening might be easier to meet for a cold one.
ttt for a few more posts.
If you are going to meet for a cold one in that area it will be at a gas station! Treat your clothes for ticks and watch your feet for snakes (or wear snake boots, chaps, or gators). Plenty of turkeys near the rivers all over eastern NC - if your hunting land borders the river you are golden.
If you enlarge this pdf file you can see the density range (as of 2005 - it's slightly more populated now). Follow the rivers and you will find the birds.
