Title: Cypress for calls ??
Post by: Gawhitaker on March 28, 2013, 09:30:00 PM
Have a few 6 to 10" dia cypress i need to cut, is it a desirable wood for slates, or strikers. If not i may use it as practice for trumpets. Thanks in advance for info, and advice

I would think for a friction call or a trumpet it would be fine. I was talking to Albert Paul last year about using Cypress as the box in a box call and he did not recommend it for a box call and his reasoning was that there tends to be too much oil in the wood. Cypress is a very pretty wood, I have seen some beautiful table tops made from Cypress.

I would think it would be pretty light for pot calls.  I do have a box call made about 7-8 years ago out of cypress.  It rocks.
