Title: Favorite calls?
Post by: ThicketThrasher on February 07, 2011, 08:56:54 PM
Ok, What's everyone like to use the most. I carry about everything but use a box and slate more than any other. Maybe because a lot of places I hunt, I need to cover some ground and be heard. Mouth calls seem to get in the way of my Copenhagen. I only use them if I have a bird coming.

If I'm working a bird I alternate between mouth call and slate/glass pot call. I started out a little different than most people the mouth call
was the first call I mastered so that will always be my go to call. I feel comfortable using anything but rarely use a box call unless its a long box and that's to locate birds. I can make any turkey sound with mouth call and pot call so i usually try and run those together to sound like
more than one bird. Its worked out pretty good for me up to this point ;)

I have a fondness for pot calls and throw a mouth call in only if I have to at the end.

And if that doesn't work, sometimes I just stand up and yell "Here Turkey!!!!"

Pot calls.  Slate, aluminum, glass - and just got a new titanium call that sounds great and will be near the top of the role this year.

I've got a very high pitch little box call I have had for years I love if there is a gobbler around he will usely gobble with it. If not I'll use a peacock call that aways works. I'll try to bring him in on a pot call, then finish the job with a mouth call. Hey maustypsu, that pot call you were talking about ,you most know Pappy, great call maker one of the best great guy....Johnny...

Mostly I use either one of two box calls depending on the situation and a glass over slate or copper pot call. These calls usually get the most work in any given hunt. I do however carry about a half a dozen strikers to give me a little versatility with the pot's. I do use mouth calls to close the deal on a bird if need be.

Yeah, Pappy is the man!!!  I have a couple calls and strikers from him.  He's all class.

I sent him two gobbler legs last year.  He turned them into knives - one for him and one for me.  They were from my first NC bird and the beard and tail fan had been carried off by mice.  So this is the perfect memento of my first bird in this state.
