Title: Patterned my 870 Youth with the SSX-TightWad and HW7's
Post by: Tom Foolery on March 23, 2013, 05:09:08 PM
I ordered a SSX from Clark and received it yesterday.  After a good cleaning I hit the range today with my 21" youth 870.

41yds - 50 degrees - 90% humidity - wind 0-5mph

.550 SSX - Fed HW 7's - 10" average - 125 - 16" average - 223
.570 TightWad - Fed 7's - 10" average - 122 - 16" average - 222

.550 SSX - Hevi13 7's - 10" average - 135 - 16" average - 225
.570 TightWad - Hevi13 7's - 10" average 127 - 16" average - 225

.550 SSX - Win 1.25oz #5's - 10" average - 38
.570 TightWad - Win 1.25oz #5's - 10" average - 63

The SSX patterns were more patchy and the TightWad shot good clean or dirty and the patterns were very even.  I guess I will keep the SSX but the TightWad outshot it today.

I am going with the TightWad due to how even all the patterns were.  It was over 100 with Hevi13 #6's also.

I am new to 20's but I think this is a pretty good looking 16" pattern.  This was the low with the TightWad, I only brushed the barrel before this shot, it should say 220 as I missed 2 pellets counting:

Do chokes break in, meaning the more you shoot them the more they tune so to speak?

I just looked and the SSX's numbers went up with every shot, 3 shots each.

My sons 870 shoots the feds awesome, he shot every kind of lead load he could get his hands on through it for months before we tried the Feds though, I mean he even hunted squirrels  and crows with that choke till turkey season come around so I believe  a lot of shooting does help break them in, his gun averages in the 165 range with a high of 181 , I have a pattern kposted in the pattern section on his gun.

Thanks guys

A couple of quick shots with the SSX and Hevi13 #6's just gave me a 111 average in the 10", very even too.

Goodness those are some great averages, 140's and 160's, that's awesome.

Those are great numbers. The ammo and choke manufacturers have really stepped up to the plate and are putting out terrific products that should give anyone a high level of confidence in the lethal power of the 20 gauge on gobblers.

Now, I just wish people would stop calling it "little."   :character0029:

I shot some this evening using the Fed 1 5/16oz #6 lead with FCW

Rem 870 Youth 21"
.570 TightWad
41yds

60 degrees wind left to right 5-15mph

10" average 43

Rem 870 Youth 21"
.550 SSX
41yds

60 degrees wind left to right 5-15mph

10" average - 64, very even  - did not do a 16" or 20" count but it was even all the way around.

I'm telling you, the more I shoot this SSX the better it shoots.

Try a Remington super full, either the .572 or .570 with those heavyweights, you may be very surprised.
