Title: First Post on here My DIY Paint Job
Post by: Oregon33 on March 21, 2013, 08:24:33 PM
I did a lot of research looking on how to custom paint guns. A lot actually came from the airsoft/paintball world. A lot of videos about painting guns differently. I did find this site though a long the way and being a hardcore turkey hunter from Oregon I had to sign up. Our season starts April 15th and I could not be more excited. I will be 24 in April and this is my 14th season since my dad and I started hunted turkeys so long ago. Its now become something we think about everyday of the year. Mossy Oak Obsession puts it lightly. haha

Anyway I dont have a tutorial just a pic of my gun just after the clear coat drying. I used 3 colors of paint and blue painters tape to create the different stripes. The spray paint is just the flat matte camo paint from Krylon.

Sand was extremely important in my opinion. It took a lot of work but was worth it. The stock is a composite so all I did was ruff that area up.

I put down down the green and then covered with tape, then the khaki color, and finishing with the dark brown.

It turned out really well. Its a mossberg 500 that is 100% on Turkeys (27 for 27) so hoping the paint wont mess that up.

The camo it had before was a dark more of a grassland color but it was starting to rub off (Gun was made in 1994) so that is why I decided to repaint it.

The first picture is the finished paint job and the second is how it looked before. I will try and get a pic up later with it all setup and ready for hunting. Looking forward to being on the site! Good luck to everyone who is out hunting already!

Your rattle can camo came out great.  Looks like the painter's tape did a real good job layering.  Did you use a razor knife to cut it?  Good luck on your 28th this year.

That looks amazing! I had a great time doing it and is something I will try again in the future. (Deer rifle might need some work) haha

I did not cut it while layering because I wanted to avoid having any straight edges. I did Cut the tape that I was putting over the action and sites so it was perfectly covered.

We are having a pretty low numbers year here so far. I have been scouting all the prime turkey habitat we have ever hunted and not finding any birds. There are a lot of birds on private land but getting access is tough (people really think I am going to shoot at cows) I have some private I can hunt so I am hoping it will pay off. Turkeys are funny creatures as you all know. They will stand on peoples porches but wont be on public land in prime habitat.
