I have been making plans to go the Chadron area for a few months. I am now second guessing if opening week of Archery season is too early. I would prefer to go when there's not as much hunting pressure but my main worry is what will the birds be doing. What should I expect for that time of the season? Any insight on the area and recent bird behavior is very much appriciated.

The birds in south central Ne are starting into their spring grounds. Saw a few fanning today..
I was there a couple years back, but it was in late May and things were on the downswing, but I still managed to find a couple that wanted to play. They did have a major wildfire this past year that may have a big impact on your plans if you were not aware of that. Good luck.
I believe you'll find that the birds are still in large winter groups. Not that that makes them unkillable, but its something to plan for. Also, the western half of the Pine Ridge NF burned to the ground last August/Sept.

Middle of last week, 75 miles from Chadron.
Birds are breaking up, lots of 2s and 3s walking around in the hills.
Thanks to those who replied. Do you think the pending cold front will have any influence on the birds the first part of the week.
I am only going to be able to be out there for 3 days. Any recommendations?
here is a 2012 Merriam bird..my old man and a buddy went out just past Chadron and took 2 Mature Merriam each, the property owner where they stayed and hunted-private land, asked that they only take 2 instead of 3 birds...they had a blast...
