I have an old pool table I will be getting rid of. Is the slate any value in regards to making Turkey calls?

Make you some good stepping stones and buy some slate for calls. You can buy slate for around a $1.50 a piece and the time,effort, and mess you will have in making your own will not be worth it. JMO
