Title: Afternoon Hunting
Post by: cobia66 on March 07, 2013, 08:39:08 PM
Hi all. What do you like to do for an afternoon hunt?  Blind calling til you get a response?  Sit quietly and listen for fly up to hunt the next morning? Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks

I like to hunt the morning and come out and have lunch and a nap then go back in around 3:00. It doesn't get dark til 7:00 or so.

I will start by getting to an area I know the turkeys use in the heat of the day - generally this is in the timber where it is shaded. I find that by scouting and finding scratching sign. I don't use a locator call in the afternoon. I just set up where I have about a 220 degree view and start clucking and yelping a little while scratching in the pine straw or leaves. If I hear a gobbler at another location I will go to him, but have had tremendous luck just blind calling like this.

At closer to fly up time I will move to an area I expect them to roost and cluck a few times and wait. If I kill him then great, if not I at least know where to be in the morning.
