Hello. I am new to this website and have a spring and fall season under my belt. I have a 93-95 model 835 mossberg 24 inch barrel non ported gun. I patterned it at 25 and 40 yards using the full and turkey choke that came with it and winchester double x turkey loads 3 inch 2oz shot 4, 5, 6 shot sizes. The gun liked the full choke with 6's giving just a few more pellets than the 5's at 40 yards in redhead turkey targets. I went with the 5's which put about a dozen and a half pellets in the head and neck of the target at 40 yards favoring the 1 or 2 o'clock postion for poi so I adjusted the best I could with factory sights and went hunting. This year I am going to start over to try to get the most out of this gun using the same shell. I am on somewhat of a budget so that's why I want to stick with that particular load and find the best choke for my gun and load. I cleaned the barrel also. Any ideas on which chokes to try? Thanks.
Get a Indian Creek! I have a 20" and a 24" barrel 835 and a 24" Browning BPS and they all shoot a very nice pattern at 40 and beyond
I'm new to the 835 world, and I use Indian Creek and Jellyheads out my Remingtons. But Clark sold me a Truglo SSX last year at the convention and it throws a great pattern out my 835. Not sure if it's the gun or the choke, but either way it's an incredible combo. Of course if you can find an old Star Dot for it, you'd be in the money.
I have an 835 from about 1998, it is the Viking grade with a 28 inch barrel. I bought a 24 inch barrel and put a Mossberg XX full extended choke in it and I shoot Win 3.5 inch 6's (red shells) and I get around 150-160 hits in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards.
My best friend has a Turkey Thug 835 with a 21" barrel and had an older 835 with a 26' barrel. I shoot an 870, and we both shoot Winchester Supreme HV 5's in 3" and 3.5" out of Kick's Gobblin Thunder .665! we are both throwin 85% pattern at 30yds in a 12' circle. We both use scopes on our guns, but that tube is awesome.
The stock choke is fine no need in waisting money on something that is not needed. Too me it's Not very sporting and challenging to shooting one 40 yds and out. Nothing like having them gobble and feel there breath hit ya.Gotta have um in ya face.
there was a star dot in the classifieds
Thanks for all the help. I did a lot of research and decided to try a different lead shot, the federal turkey shok 3 inch 1 an 7/8 oz. 5 an 6 shot. Patterning @ 10 yards is all I've done so far but the federals shoot straight out of my 835 and the winchester 3 inch 2 oz. 5 an 6 shot shoot to the right. I shot each of the four different shell 4 times each just to be sure. I am going to go with the federals as they shot straighter and had a better pattern. On a day similar to spring temperatures and little or no wind I will try the federals at 25 and 40 yards. Thanks again.
