Title: Best lead load for IC choke
Post by: hosscat on February 22, 2013, 09:15:32 AM
I'm setting up my new dedicated turkey gun, Win 1300, 22" barrel, IC choke tube.  I'm have some nitro mega weights that I am going to shoot, but I plan on calling up 1 or 2 for my wife and I'm looking for something else, for her to shoot.  Probably a 2-3/4" load (it has a scope and I don't want her to get scope eye).  Does anyone have any loads I should recommend first.

Thanks,

Winch STH 126 is a 2.75" 1.5 oz load of buffered, CP 6s that should do well to 35 yds or so from that choke. Recoil will still be relatively stout at 1300 fps. Believe it or not, a high quality target load with 1.125 oz of 7.5s will kill any turkey alive to 35 yds from that choke with very little recoil. Take a look at this 30 yd pattern shot from my 1187/ IC .665 @ 30 yds. Lead 7.5s have the energy to cleanly kill to 35.

Have you considered some of the 2 3/4" hevishot loads?

Thanks,

For many years, my grandfather shot Winchester 2.75" 1.5 ounce 6's out of the Winny 1300 NWTF of his. He killed a pile of birds with those loads.

I am looking for something less expensive, and I am leaning heavily toward the Winchester 1.5oz. #6, I am going to try and pick up a box today so I can check its pattern this weekend.  Since my IC tube is a documented producer with HTL loads if the lead 6's don't work out I may end up getting some hevi shot.

Thanks,  I will try and post some numbers on Monday.

FWIW, my wife is 5'6 and 120 lbs and she killed all of her birds last year with the same 1300 NWTF and Hevi 3/2/7's. I had her pattern with high brass field loads and shoot 3" on hunts. She never said it kicked her.

Very happy with my results.  It was raining at my house but I have an pretty goos size barn so I decided I would just set my target about 20 yards outside and I would shoot from inside the barn.

First off I thought I had my scope pretty well sighted in with the factory win. turkey choke, but when I shot it with the IC choke I was off around 14" at 30 yards.  So I had to send the next few shots getting it back sighted in.  I ended up getting a box of 3" federal strut shok 1-3/4 oz #6's as a backup to my nitros.  I only shot them at 20 and 30 yards, I didn't count the 20 yard pattern but the 30 yard was 204 in a 10" circle, very nice.

Then I backed up to 40 yards and shot one of my 3" nitro mega weights, I counted 251, in the 10" ring at a ranged 40 yards.  Very pumped.
