Title: Forum Feedback Time
Post by: Old Gobbler on February 15, 2013, 10:08:38 PM
Its Forum Feedback Time guys

Over the years I have always asked and valued the members input and feedback to help improve the site for you all

If there is a new category you think is worthy of consideration let me know

I added numerous forum sections , added another turkey contest for individual members , and streamlined the bingo process so we can play MORE bingo games - looking forward to developing the site further in the future --Shannon

One other thing , after spring time I am going to have a annual screen name change day - some of you have asked me before if they could change their forum screen name to something they would like better than what they initially chose upon registration - probably in June , I will have a day where the interested members can PM me and I will switch out your old handle for a new one

I know its a hunting forum and a turkey hunting one at that, but how about a fly fishing board. I have seen of the guys tie flies on here and maybe they can get a chance to swap or sell.Plus I love to read about those eastern trout and looking at the picture of the fish and flies they use. Maybe I can start throwing some storys from California's eastern serrias trout and compare styles.

I belong to several forums, state based, species based, and methods based.  Maybe it's because turkey hunting and all that surrounds turkey hunting is my passion, but I love where OG has ended up.   Ihave only been of for a little over a year, but this is a great place!  The culture of the forum is second to none!

As long as the focus of the site is family friendly turkey hunting, this is the place to be!

I have been on the forum for over 2 years and like where it has ended up.
I thought it rocked then but really like what it has grown into. Second to none IMHO.

I like how the contest has grown to now include individual achievements. The prizes on Bingo are awesome.....the folks are friendly and family environment is maintained. Last but not least we have a section where we can share encouragement for our faith, prayer request.....you won this minister over right there.

So in short I like it and if any area needs improvement I cannot foresee anything.
Great site

OG is as good as it gets.  It's easy to navigate, simple, and straight forward.

This place is just class act.

Its such a nice place to be that I actually do not tell certain people about it because of there not so class act personalities. No need for those people here.

The only thing I would like to see is the return of the reloading section. I understand why it was removed and don't have a problem with that. However could you not insert a dis claimer that would protect OG from possible litigation.

This is an AWESOME PLACE!!! I love it. I have been on here for along time. There maybe similar forums but absolutley NONE LIKE IT. This place is full of good people. Y'all deserve the credit for weeding out knotheads and folks that seem to want to put down on folks or their choice of equipment. Just because someone hunts with a gun or equipment I don't like don't mean you can't use it. You see this alot in other places but not here. Keep up the great work!!!!   :thanks:

My suggestion is just organizational in nature. The "Turkey Hunting Tips" section seems to have become a catch-all for a bunch of forums that have nothing to do with turkey hunting tips, or even turkeys in some cases. It seems this could be reorganized into several new sections.

For example, Turkey Taxidermy, Turkey Bowhunting, Fall Turkey Hunting, and Turkey Hunting Tips, Strategies, and Methods (currently under General Discussion) could all be pooled into a Turkey Hunting and Information section. Game Camera Pictures, Wildlife Photography, and You-Tube Turkey Hunting Videos could form a Media or Video And Photography section. The whole section just seems like it could use a reshuffle.

It's not a huge deal when using a web browser because you see all the forums at once anyway, but the current structure is a bit more cumbersome when using something like Tapatalk where you have to browse down through each level of hierarchy.

I personally don't care for all the political talk in the main section.
I don't have a lot of posts so maybe my opinions not worth much, but I'd rather read about turkeys than politicians.

Love this place!Great bunch of folks here!I don't post very much but i'm on here just about every day for over  the past two years reading posts. This is the only forum i'm a member of.I don't think i would change a thing but i do like the idea of maybe a monthly article/profile Q&A style on callmakers/choke builders/hunting gear stuff maybe focusing on the small mom and pop busniesses that make our country great!.......ward

Wish we could speed it up. Since we changed to the newer set up, I have long delays before a post or forum kicks on. Took me about 15 seconds just to be able to reply to this thread.

I have only been here for a few months, but very similar to ArcheryTalk , see below link

http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/

I have learned  a great deal of info from a great group of guys  that will make me a better person and a better Outdoorsman.

I particularly like the daily devotionals and the gun section and very much appreciate the easy spell check link on this

Keep up the great work!!! :OGani:

For people with slow page reloads - that will be due to the heavy graphics and your CPU/connection  not being able to keep pace - there is some remedies like clear out your cache and cookies - save your passwords , not for just this site but all your passwords, banking, facebook  etc... cause clearing this out will likely erase them

Reloading - Yes I miss it too , I built that place with the best of intentions -It could come back one day , maybe soon... who knows ..... I will try very hard to keep it to generalities and not mention any old water under the bridge -its been beaten to death but for the benefit of those who don't know I'll give you some 411 in no particular order

Peoples safety ,As the reloading grew popular so did peoples confidence in many areas - there were people with zero loading experience tackling some heavy duty stuff - my observations is that some were in over their heads - one post in particular, that was the one that forced me to wake up and  smell the coffee was when a member was so encouraged to reload a shot material - he opened up a shotgun shell Federal HW and replaced it with another projectile --  Numerous personal accounts of people witnessing other people shooting some of these " tested recipe " handloads and letting me know how dangerous they actually are because the user(s) have no clue what they are doing with the press and formula   - that was that for reloading as soon as I heard that , I was racing to delete the entire section right there and then -  Liability ..lets not go there its not pretty -especially if I am made aware there is a "third party" for profit venture and there is no insurance ..ATF....lets not go there , thats so ugly it broke the "ugly barrier" kind of like a how that girl looks after those 12 beers wear off - If I was ever to overcome these legal hurdles I would gladly place the reloading  back in there

Politics -  like the rest of you I dont watch the news anymore for fear they will show or mention the name or face of the POTUS - I hate to be reminded of it -  I would like to create a political section , but that would like feeding garbage bears - pretty soon a very left leaner would go in there and start fighting with the bulk of the site and that would be unpleasant -- People post about politis here because they know they can find a consoling shoulder to cry on - its at the top of everyones minds these days

Callmaker Interview - I wanted to do something like this about 4-5 years ago - we will see - At the time I had a swarm of callmakers on the site , as OG was the New hot place to show off calls - this was 2008 when the economy didnt quite catch up to peoples wallets - the economy has dusted off alot of callmakers _ I will see what we can do --

Thanks and keep em' coming --Shannon

This is one of the best pull up a log to the fire forums I know of. Everyone seems like a old friend. Thanks for a great place.

Glad to hear about the name change day comming when I first signed on I signed up as reflex264 which I use on about a dozen forums. When our internet service ( I live in the sticks and only dial up is availible) failed the email address I used was the one from the old ISP. I couldn't log on so I had to use my yahoo address and set up my reflexl identity. It would be nice to once again be reflex264.

My only suggestion is to have an "all" button next to the number of pages on an individual thread. TNdeer.com has this feature and it makes it a lot easier to read through the threads.

I like to travel to different states and thought by now either my son would be traveling with me or my Dad, but Dad has passed and my boy has no interest now.  Maybe that'll change.  But I book a trip or two every year and if warranted I'd like a section that I could go on and find members that want to get together in small groups and travel to different stated to hunt birds.

I like it the way it is! Love being on here. I like it because as dumb as a question may be, people don't bash you to death if you don't know something. That's the only way new hunters can learn. And I haven't ran into any here that doesn't like to help others! Thanks for the hard work Old Gobbler!

I also like the hoover option for a preview of the thread.

IMO I dislike micro managing forums.  Yes its easier to find things that interest a user, BUT alot of what I find interesting I do not set out looking for.  And I am not one to browse through subcategories to see whats new. And it drives user activity down in some categories to the point they become useless.

Now I do use the whats new feature to look up recent posts on other forums but this one has so much going on I don't use as often.  But would be cool if you can add a setting where I can check out new posts in specific categories.

I love this site! I don't do social media in general (my wife swears this is FB for turkey hunters), but I enjoy being here.

I wouldn't change a thing about the site or the people. This site has saved me a small fortune in wasted time and money and also cost me a small fortune on bad to the bone turkey rigs!

Thanks Shannon for all that you have done for this site!

Great site, glad I finally joined, as i had been a lurker for a long time.

On other forums, when you move the cursor over the post title, it will show the first few sentences. forum.gon.com for example. Sometimes the title is vague, or misleading, and this gives you a better idea of what you are clicking on. simply a thought that might or might not be able to be done.

The only other thing I would say, is that the contest being 1 bird per member, up to 9 birds total, is not neccessarily the best way to find the best team. Killing a big bird is luck and numbers. It would seem to me that each member having 2 or 3 slots to fill would weed out some of the teams. What I'm getting at, is that Team alabama killed 60 some odd birds last year between the 12 of them, and although the teams behind them were very close, I don't think the birds killed was anywhere close to that. I realize that this is probly not possible, as some states you can only kill a bird or two a season. But it was just an observation of mine.

overall its a wonderful site, thanks for hosting it, and please don't take this as complaining, simply some observations.

On the contest idea.  I would make it 1 bird no upgrades.  And you have to post up within the week of kill.

This evens out the contest between teams that have the ability to kill 60 birds and those teams for reasons of law and $ can only shoot 12.  Now you have to strategize if the bird is worth entering or if you want to chance getting a bigger bird or being skunked all together.

What a great site, I have way to much free time, and enjoy filling some of it reading and posting on the OG. I get good advice when i need it, and try to give good advice when i can. kinda like a internet hunting camp.
would like to see the sellers individual listings in the classifieds highlighted when he/she checks them or has to mark them sold, takes awhile to find them when they move down the ladder. I think this would get more of the sold items marked sold.
