What are the best shells for a mossberg 835 with the factory turkey choke? I would like to shoot lead, but I will shot hevi stuff if that's what I need. I don't really wanna spend 100 bucks on a choke tube and 5 shells. And I don't want to throw a pattern so tight I have to worry about missing at close range.
Suggestions?
Federal lead loads with the FCW. Either 3" or 3.5" #5 or #6 shot.
I understand. You will of course get much better and more effective patterns with Hevi-13 shells but if you want to use the factory lead-only choke that came with your gun, I'd recommend the highest lead payload shell with #6 shot that you can find.
I'm not a big fan of 3.5" shells however, so I'd recommend a 2 oz. load of #6 shot in a 3" shell. The Winchester "Red" shell, XX should work.
What will help your gun pattern better, regardless of choke or shell, is for you to "deep clean" the bore and the choke. that process takes a little bit of time but it's well worth the effort.
You can find the guidelines in the article "Cleaning a Shotgun" barrel by clicking on the allaboutshooting banner below this post.
Good luck this spring with your 835. They are great guns.
Thanks,
Clark
try win supreme 3 1/2 #5 that's the 2 oz pay load , should pattern well out of your set up. ps this will kick the tar out of u we say it kills on both ends
federal flight control 5's in 2 oz (hv) or 2.25 oz in 3.5 or any winchester supreme 5's double x or hv.

X2. Winchester "black" loads have worked best in my 835.
Winchester 3.5" 2oz #5's and 3.5" 2.25oz #6's shot the best from my factory choke.
