I was hit in the back of the leg about 8 or 10 years back by a water moccasin. Then two years later I stepped on a copperhead. My uncle was behind me and saw that one move as I picked my foot up. Needless to say, you will not catch me in the woods without snake boots on down here in the south unless the high it going to be below freezing for the day.

Oh yea, I forgot about the one that fell out of the steering column-dash on the rhino a couple of years back. 18" layed across my leg just above my open snake boot on a workday with shorts on. The scooter had been parked in a cutover while we went to town and ate lunch. Needless to say getting out of a rhino moving at 35 miles an hour can be done and quickly! He did not strike me but it could have been interesting had he gone down my boot

Got hit on the toe by a canebrake rattler a few years back. Was sitting up calling a gobbler.

up onto the log, then look down to see if there is a snake tucked up against the other side of the log. Then I step down if all clear.

Getting hit means struck in the boots or snake chaps without getting fangs or venon in you. Getting bit means having fangs in your body (sometimes it is a "dry hit" with no venom). I was hit once by a pygmy rattler - he couldn't penetrate my combat boots (a very small rattler, but with very toxic venom).

Never been actually hit by one although I have stepped on a few and did the old hop, skip, and jump. I did sit on one 2 years ago as I hurried to set up on a turkey. Didn't know it until about 45 minutes later when I had to move to another location and when I got up it scampered off. I guess it liked it down there. Must of been a girl snake. :love5: :TooFunny:
I got struck by a fat SC moccasin 3 years ago on the ankle of my danner pronghorn snakeboots. Hunting all by myself in a deep swamp. Scared the out of me, and hurt pretty bad. By the time I got them off, my ankle was blue.

Had some close calls over the years. In October while crawlin' around blood trailin', I placed my right hand down to lean forward for a better look anf was within 3-4 inches of a pygmy rattler. :o

I've been hit on the toe of a regular boot by a pigmy rattler once, fortunately it didn't penetrate. Another time a BIG water mocassin hit me in the calf at night when I was walking out of the woods. Thankfully I was wearing snake boots. This snake had to have been huge. It felt like someone hauled off and punched me in the calf as hard as they could!! I walked on water on the way out of that swamp!!!! :o
Back about 30 years ago got bite by a cottonmouth, had on a pare of rubber knee boots and jeans and the snake hit right at the top of the boots and on the seam of the jeans....all it did was leave two small red marks but scaried me...don't think there was any snake boots back then.

I bet I was running a hundred miles a hour but did never move out of my spot. It was about six feet long. It was a wonder I did not kill my self on the slick rocks!

Got bit by a black snake once between the index and thumb. Had to use a screw driver to pull him loose.

If you have ever been hit by one, you will understand when I say all 4 times I sat down after I killed the snake and was overwhelmed. After the two moccasins I actually called the chaps manufacture and thanked them!

Sat down to eat a lunch one day at LBL after chasing a turkey all morning. About 30 minutes later I got up to leave and saw a dead chipmonk about 3 foot from where I was sitting. I picked him up and he was still limp. I noticed a couple drops of blood on him but couldn't figure out what happended to him. Then suddenly Duhhhhh! Looked down and there was a four foot long timber rattler laying there coiled up. He was nice enough to let me set there and not bother me. So I killed him anyway. No use taking any chances.
Knock on wood never been bit. Seen a lot of Pygmy Rattlers in swamps. Watched Moccasin swim between my brothers legs while he was wading in front of me on a bow hunt in a swamp. Watched a moccasin swim between my wife and shore nobody bit. Had close calls with Diamond Back Rattlers, had close call with 5 foot moccasin while walking dogs and children on their first walk. dispatched the snake with biggest stick I could find. (1.5 feet away) Many close calls with Timber Rattlers. Dispatched a few of them. Been bit by corn snakes and yellow rat snakes that were in my house trying to get them out. Came up on a 5 foot diamondback rattler on New Years day this year and let him go to a better place. Dispatched him.
Hunt with a guy who thinks we are crazy to kill venemous snakes. On that we do not agree. He is a Veterinarian and raises snakes. We take him with us when we are cutting firewood and he removes the Timber Rattlers when we come across them. I have been happy to have him more than once. God only knows how many close calls I've had hunting in the swamps I've hunted in Fla. GA and SC. God has blessed me with no bites in 40 plus years outdoors. :jesus-cross: :thanks:

I visited Tom Gaskins at His Cypress Knee Museum in Palmdale ,Fl back in 1985.He said he hunted barefoot and killed ~~ 500 gobblers in the swamps of Florida, all sans -boots.He was an interesting man and made some good yelpers.He has past on and his son continues making his calls.
Mr Tom , said," don't look for snakes when you're turkey hunting, just hunt." I have been hunting gobblers since 1962 and have never had a pair of snake boots.I see plenty of pit vipers every spring and have been struck at, but not hit.I follow Mr.Gaskins advise and just hunt.

Man some of you guys just must not be livin right. I am a forester and spend a lot of time in the woods (30 years) and have been struck at once and not hit. Never owned a pair of snake boots. The only snake I will kill is a cottonmouth- they are kinda mean. I just don't look for them - might scare me to know how many I've stepped on or over. There has never been a snake bite fatality in Mississippi.
I live in Iowa so we don't have any real bad snakes. I have caught a moccasin while out fishing, luckily by the head, and then realized what it was when he opened his mouth. I love snakes though and have always wanted to see some rattlers and copperheads. I have been bitten many times by lots of nonpoisonous snakes though, I remember sitting in school picking teeth out of my hand many times.

Never been bit or hit but I have had my close encounters!! One day while working out in the woods I stepped in a hole. I was counting tree species in the understory so I stood there a bit. As soon as I stepped out of the hole my buddy's eyes got real big and he started freaking out. All he could do was point. I turned to see a copperhead coming out of that same hole. Nope. In all the years I've been hunting only seen 3 poisonous snakes, not counting road kills. Saw a copperhead while working hay, water moccasin while fishing, and saw a small rattlers last spring. We see plenty of copperheads and rattlers dead on the road. I'm always carefull to kick the leaves away before sitting down,and if I see a snake I always give him plenty of room. Last summer we had 5-6ft rat snake outside the house. I let him live. They are good at killing pest and even poisonous snakes.
Struck two times and two close calls. All big ole NASTY water moccasins. And before somebody says I'm not careful, brother ain't nobody as careful where they put thier foot as me-especially after that first strike. I always, always wear snake boots now.
Living where I do in Georgia, it seems we are infested with moccasins, rattlers, and the occasional copperhead. Had some close calls, especially out coon hunting on warm nights. I recall one night in particular walking back to the truck from a tree in a large cypress swamp, I stopped to catch my breath about halfway back. Standing in thigh deep water, I didn't realize there was a moccasin coiled in the root system of a big cypress right next to me and the dog. Walked up on several water moccasins in swamps that way, and nearly stepped on a couple big rattlesnakes, but God has been with me on each of these occasions. I'm always very particular about where I put my feet in the woods, and ALWAYS have on a pair of snakeboots when its hot enough for snakes to be crawling. Always wear snakeproof hip waders while running dogs as well. You can't be too careful, especially when hunting by yourself and a mile or more from your truck. Another thing I've learned when stepping over fallen logs is to ALWAYS check the underside of the log before you step over it. Rattlesnakes love to lay under fallen logs waiting on their dinner to wander by.
Where I grew up we had sidewinders, timber rattlers in the mountains, and sand rattlers on the desert. Our last farm was 40 acres and in one year I killed over 100 rattlers there. My opinion was if it crawled coiled or struck it was dead. I have not been bitten but I have had them strike and miss many times, so if I saw one or it let his rattles go he was belly up for sure. I hate Snakes.
I don't even think about being bit while wandering around. Don't get me wrong, I've been bit by alot of snakes trying to catch them...garter snakes and black snakes mostly....but never just by walking by one.

This is a great thread..........I have always been very jealous of you southern boys because of all the ducks you have to hunt. I am from Ohio and I think that I was born to hunt ducks, but stuck in an area with no ducks to hunt........LOL.
Anyway after reading this I think I am happy where I am at, just because of all the snakes you guys have got to deal with.
I hate snakes, I think if someone caught me on tape dispatching a black snake, they could make a workout video out of it.......... Nothing like going to work on one!!!!!

Have had some of bird dogs get bit by rattlers, sure does mess up your hunt not to mention the dog.. Got a BIG cotton mouth in my minnow seine while seining fantails on Medina Airbase in 85' big around as my thigh, he was one PO'd snake but was able to get out of the water before he got me. Close enough to get the pucker factor.. Glad there aren't any of those nasty buggers here.

trust me, your duck hunting is a lot better up there. theres only 3 southern states that are worth a crap for duck hunting, arkie, louisianna, and mississippi, with a very small portion of tennessee.
I've been struck once and stepped on two. several years ago I was frog gigging, and stepped on a copperhead while barefoot pulling the canoe out of the water. Thats a bad feeling, a snake under your barefeet. Last year I was running late on a preseason scouting trip and hustling through some ankle deep flooded timber at dawn. all the sudden i felt a big impact on the back of my leg. Literally felt like someone took a 9 iron to the rear of my calf. I turned around and there was a cottonmouth about the size of my forearm. Also last year, I was on a gobbling bird in a swamp bottom, and he was hung up on a ditch, so I was doing a big loop to reposition, I was in a hurry, and on the jog. stepped right on a big timber rattler. he never made a sound until I started bashin his head in with a stick.

You sound like a Socal boy,We have all of those and Mojavie Greens.If you get stuck by a MG you better pray that the local hospital has the anti venom. Not all hospitals carry the MG anti venom and non of the other ones work. I have only stepped on two snakes fishing a creek up in the local mountains. I think they were pacific rattlers. I dont worry to much when turkey hunting in California. We have way to many MT lions out here to worry about snakes.

me and 2 of my buddies were walkin around the pond one night shootin snakes with a 22 and had already killed 2 then as we walked around to the other side i felt something hit my leg and looked down and there was a snake under my foot. at first i thought they had threw 1 at me because i am terrified of snakes but when i realized they still had the 2 in their hands i took off screaming like a 6 yr old girl. the funny part is that it was dark and i had the only lantern and one of them was barefoot and i was gone!!!!!! they finally got me to come back and i had stepped on its head. i think it was a copper moccasin.#theycallmethestreak :emoticon-cartoon-012:
i am notorious for belly crawling to a big tom if he is hung up or henned up and i am just waiting to be face to face with a big rattler one day but i will die from heart failure before the venom hits me. when all else fails pull out the ol spot and stalk technique :z-guntootsmiley:

Ha sounds like something I would do.
I have had a few close calls but never been hit. I was dove hunting about 6 years ago and downed a bird that fell in the woods. Walking over to it it was laying next to a creek. About the time i leaned down to pick it up a copperhead jumped of the bank on the other side which was only about 3' from me. Needless to say I don't think i have ever unshouldered and shoot that fast before.
One other time I was around 8, fishing at my grandmothers place. The tree limb next to me shook and a big snake fell on the ground. I took off and the dang snake chased me.
All these happened in South Alabama, now I am in Kansas and have not seen many snakes here. I have heard that there are rattlers here.

Never bit but when I was a kid, me and a buddy was playing baseball outside. One of us hit the ball into some ivy that was growing over about 3 rail road ties that they used to line their driveway. While I was digging through the ivy I happened to look up and I was starring a copperhead in the eye that was about 4 inches from my face. I slooowly backed away then ran like hell!!! He was a big-un too, still freaks me out to this day

If u boys want more than snake boots, check out wicks waders....waterproof and more importantly snake proof. My buddy bought 300 acres with 100 of it being swamp. Long story short, we caught 38 beavers ( insert joke here) and proceeded to spend most of the summer clearing out dams and killing a lot of moccasins. 120 in 4 weekends. Not one attempted bite. By the last weekend we trusted the boots enough to kick at them, thank God none of them struck at me :toothy12:
I've had a close call or two myself, nothing too serious though. I must smell and or taste bad, to rattlers especially. ;D

Got struck at by a massassagua rattler at work last summer. There are boatloads of rattlers and copperheads at work. Actually had a guy get struck, but luckily it hit right where the top of his boot and pantleg met. There was a wet spot the size of a dime where the snake hit.
Scarey stuff luckily iv always spotted him before getting to close
3 years ago in july I got bit on the hand by a cottonmouth. Talk about painful. I still have problems with my hand to this day. He didn't get alot of venom in me. One fang went in and the other just scratched the skin a little bit, and I'm still dumb enough to handle em.
Copperhead got me on the foot while blowing leaves around a wood pile. Dr. looked at it and said the sucker didn't put much venom in, probably because it was cool weather in October??? My foot was purple and black for a long time. I got lucky!

You're like that guy that I saw on a talk show way back in the 70's that had been hit something like 9 times by lightning. :o I've never seen but two poisionous snakes in the wild in my life, a copperhead here in MO, and a tiny prairie rattler in KS. I hunt Alabama, but am always there early in the season, and seldom see a snake of any kind.
first year I bought snake boots I tried them out on purpose in Texas with a Diamondback and again with the second pair with a Georgia timber.

Wow, I feel very fortunate to not have to worry about snakes where I turkey hunt. I do hunt in bear, cougar, and wolf country, but I don't have to worry about accidentally stepping on one of those critters. ;D
I've run across more copperheads and cottonmouths that I can count. Killed a few when I was younger and thought it was cool. I wouldn't kill any kind of snake now unless it was by my house and I had small children..
Never have and I have been turkey hunting since 1969. I have walked through some of the swampiest areas of the Deep South and the rattlesnake filled woods of South Alabama.
This past spring, I stepped on top of a large timber rattler and he did not strike at me. Why? I guess I was just lucky.
