Backwater and I are going scouting one of our spots tomorrow. Weather down here in Florida has not been constant or normal. Its been unseasonably hot, until a couple weeks ago, and then got down to 30s and 40s for several night in a row.
They where gobbling, but that might have shut them back up. We will find out in the morning.
We hunt public land, so there are a lot of variables. We might throw a couple of cameras up also.
John
Good luck guys hope to see some pics.
Good luck guys. Prob another month and half before I start scouting. Picked up some new land that holds a ton of Rios, saw a group of 2-300 while deer and pheasant hunting, very excited.

We went this morning to scout. We rode our bikes 5 1/2 miles on a dirt road at 5:00 am, then we walked back to our spot, about 2 miles total. Scouted for 3 hours, And then we had to get back out, about 7 more miles, of walking and biking. Our legs where reminding us that we were not that young anymore.
Did not see much sign. Did put out 2 cameras in some good areas. Ray did find a 4 point shed.
Here is some picture clip of a video from last year. I could not get the video to up load.
We think the gobbler doing the chasing is still alive.

:agreed:.... That was a tough scouting trip. Looking forward to scouting our other hunting spot. John, I saw we give today's spot another try in the morning. Lol.....
When does your season open?
Our season opens on March 16th.
Boy it wont be long! I wish ours started that early. Ours starts March 30.
April 10 here

Going out on another scouting trip in the morning. There is a cold front moving through our general area that may shut them up. We shall see.
Was 16° this morning, saw 3 big toms strutting, I think they are ready for spring also.

I saw 9 gobblers and two strutters the other day near my home.Just wish it was March 30th.
Now have 10" snow on the ground, 6" more tomorrow night. Need to get out and do some bird counting.

Ray and I went out again, Sunday before church. He heard a few gobble and we have a nice one on one of our cameras. Now if they are there on opening day and will cooperate and there is no one else around, we could have a good hunt.
John
I saw a flock of 30+ birds yesterday. They were about 40 yards from the road we were on and there was 2 strutters. I rolled down the window and whistled as loud as I can. I got both birds to shock gobble as they were walking away. ;D
we are going out again tomorrow to check out some cameras at 1 of our spots.
Here is a picture of one that we found, and will probably be hunting him opening weekend.

That would be a great start to the season!

You guys in the south kill me with the earlier season starts. We still have a foot of snow on the ground in some areas. I'll be chomping at the bit living vicariously thorugh your hunts until mid April. Can't wait to see some photos or vids.
man what an awesome bird . good luck on that one keep us updated .
Looks like He might have a double beard. I am taking my daughter on a youth hunt this weekend, and I am hoping to here more birds. The only problem with that is if I can hear them someone else can too.
Ray and I usually like to walk way back and get away from people.
The bird in the picture is in one of those hard to get to way back there spots.
One of us will defiantly spend some time hunting that bird.
John
Heard 3 birds gobbling on the limb this morning, got me real fired up. It was 29 degrees here and foggy as all get out. One kept it up for 20 mins after he hit the ground.
I still have 30 days to go yet but was out yesterday running around seen 2 in a field i hunt i pulled in and look around there must of been 60 plus birds down in the bottom around the old oak tree .I have been watching many birds if we get a warm dry day i will get the video camera out and start snapping pictures ..
Seems to be good numbers of birds this year. Need spring to arrive soon, winter is getting old.

No joke! It was in the 30s today on Kentucky and the wind would cut you in two. Last year it warmed up early and the birds were past their prime by the time season arrived. I keep telling myself this could be a good thing. They are still grouped up right now. I am ready for warmer weather though.

they finally starting to gobble here in rocky top
Those 1st gobbles of the year are awesome.
There is nothing like hearing a turkey gobble in the woods.
There have been 3 herds of birds feeding along the side of the roads around my shack, and I saw a huge tom who looked like he could go thirty pounds the other day, but no talking yet up here in Northwest Arkansas that I've heard. My next door neighbor saw two struttin' in a field in the evening a few days ago.
Another cold spell coming through this week. Our season starts 4-20.
Seems to be plenty of birds, though...
Still on a great number of birds we got snow last 2 days here .very cold still got alot of time to go ..
Won't quit, 6-12" snow forecasted this weekend, 1 week before I am to be taking my nephew for youth season. Might have to head out west, those rios always seem to be ready.

I have a 1 day hunt as Rays buddy on a WMA on Tuesday. I went out today and located a couple of gobblers, so hopefully we can get in front of them.
Still have another week until my good hunt, that will be my best chance of the year.
John
