Title: Are some Gun & Choke Combos picky about the Load being used?
Post by: 3" 870 Shell Shucker on January 26, 2013, 02:13:50 AM
Just some notes after looking through a bunch of old Turkey load patterns...

In my 3" 870 with 28" Barrel, my best patterns have been with:
Factory #5 Lead Loads - Indian Creek .665 (Also Factory #5, #6, and #7 HTL)
Factory #6 Lead Loads - Ventilator .655
#6 Lead Reloads - Indian Creek .675 or Ventilator .655
#4x#5x#6x#7.5 Lead Reloads - Ventilator .655
(I have a Kick's GT .650 that eats light loads, but I haven't run any Turkey loads through it.)

In my 3" BPS with 28" INV+ Barrel
All Factory Lead and HTL Loads, and Lead Reloads - Indian Creek BDS SS .665
Every Pattern with Every Load has been rock solid.  1 Choke, Regardless of Load.
If this was a dedicated Turkey gun, I could glue this choke in place and forget about it.

The 870 combo varies, but the BPS combo is constant?

Same thing for me and my 835's, my thumbhole gun in particular.  The thing just digests about every load I feed it and spits out great patterns with a number of different chokes.  My buddy Norm's 870 SM on the other hand?  About as finicky a gun as you will ever find.  Went through no fewer than 6 chokes and 10 different loadings of both pb and htl shot till we finally  settled on one combo.  My SBE II while somewhat finicky shoots shoots great with a few loads/brands with the .670 PG in it.

I had an issue with inconsistancy with my 835 with multiple loads. I attributed it to a short barrel, and it seemed that I could just never get what I wanted.
I picked up a SumToy choke and that all changed. I have shot everything from the old red pre-flite control feds, up to the Win XRHD's, and I get nothing but nice, even patterns. Some loads put up bigger numbers, but I have not found a choke that produces a better killing pattern out of my gun than the SumToy.
This justs proves that any gun can be a killer if you find the right combination.
