Title: Retrieved Lightfield Slug From A Doe. (Picture Added)
Post by: redarrow on November 30, 2012, 12:57:48 PM
Doe was shot by my hunting buddy using a 20 ga. Lightfield 2 3/4 sabot slug. It went through the left rib cage about 6 inches back of the leg crease ,took out both lungs and stopped just under the skin on the opposite shoulder. The only bones it encountered were the ribs. looks to me like it turned sideways after hitting the left ribs and was laying sideways under the skin. It did its job and she only ran 40-50 yards.I was surprised it didn't mushroom more. The hole in the shoulder is where I slit the skin to remove the slug.

How far was the shot?  I'm not sure how high the velocity is with that 2 3/4" 20ga round.

I've seen the same thing with Winchester sabots...But they were going through paper sideways.I went with a bullet in a sabot..Remington Core-Locked Ultra.Awesome slug.

Excellent choice, the Lightfield slugs are not even close to the same quality they were years ago.  I used to shoot them out of a Benelli 12 ga with an E.R. Shaw slug barrel years ago and the slugs they make today are of no comparison.  Softer lead and less energy, the same thing with the 20 gauge and that is why my nephew is shooting the core locked ultra as well now.

I gave up on the lightfield's as well.  Good groups on paper but I didn't like the results on deer.  Smacked one in the shoulder about 7-8 years ago at 15 yards with a Benelli Black Eagle 12 ga and the Lightfield blue hull and didn't get an exit.  I shoot the Federal Barnes expanders out of all my slug guns now.  Great blood trails and an exit hole about 70% of the time.

I've never tried Lightfields out of my H&R.  I've heard good things, though.  My gun shoots Rem Ultra Core-Lokts and Win Partition Golds interchangeably at 100 yards, so I always have a choice.  The Rems are almost double the price, though.  HOWEVER, since Win changed the boxes and lowered the advertised velocity, whether it's a truer velocity or not, they don't quite shoot as well.  I've fired the new style and old style back-to-back, and even the burnt powder has a different smell.  If I could handload slugs in that performance range, just to guarantee some consistency, I would.   :-\

Wow.  I'll think twice about Lightfields.
