Title: Antelope hunt
Post by: boomer on October 21, 2012, 10:15:55 AM
It took us five years of applying to get a tag for the unit we wanted in Nebraska. We ended up taking the whole first week of the firearm season off. So last Saturday we made the 8hr drive to the area we would be hunting. After setting up camp we started look for some antelope.
Here is a pic of camp for the week.

The first hour of the hunt we found a monster antelope watched him walk over a hill. Then off we went after him. It was amazing on how they can disappear so fast in the wide open. Ended up watching that area until sunset and never saw him again. Hunted the first couple days just holding out to see him again but he was never seen again. A sunset pic of the first night.

I had a lot of chances to shot some nice bucks but seemed a doe was always standing in the way or the angle of the shot was wrong. On the fourth day of the hunt I got a chance at one. I made a 400yrd shot he only went 30yrds.

Well back at camp skinning my antelope I thought I heard something like a rattle but wasn't sure at first. But after looking a around a couple times I found what was making the noise a rattle snake about 2ft from the cooler I was sitting on. I made it 10ft in one step I think then I grabbed my handgun. Well we had grilled snake for supper that night.

The only bad part it was about two miles to the truck. Paul went for the deer cart and I started gutting it. Well off on my 2 mile push.

Before shooting mine we found a nice water about 5 miles from the road with a lot of antelope sign around it. That was the plan to be sitting at the next morning before light. Here is Paul waiting for his chance at sunrise.

A couple hours later we had some does come in for a drink.

About an hour after the does came in a nice buck and doe came in. Paul made a 100yrd shot he only 75yrds.

And Paul doing his 5 mile drag back to the truck.

It was a blast hunting antelope. I think we walked 30 miles over our hunt. Ended up with blisters on both of my feet but it was worth it. Just hope it doesn't take another 5 years to hunt them in Nebraska.

great job looks like your speed goat went well.  5 years to get drawn doesn't seem bad at all it took me 24 years to get a goat tag in Arizona.

24 years would suck to wait that long for a tag.
